The Basics Of Windows
  • What is Windows?
  • The Windows Operating System gives users the
    ability to communicate with the computer.
  • Windows is known as a graphical user interface
    (GUI pronounced gooey) and utilizes graphical
    components such as menus, icons, and dialog boxes
    for ease of use.
  • The Desktop, the Windows working environment,
    appears on the screen when start-up completes.
  • Windows allows multiple applications to run at
    the same time.

Starting Windows
  • Windows logon procedures
  • Turn on the computer (it will automatically
    boot).
  • There are two power buttons on your system, one
    for your monitor and one for the system unit.
  • Always start the monitor before starting the
    system unit. Never shut the system unit down with
    the power button.
  • Enter User name and Password.
  • Click the OK button.
  • NOTE If the computer is already running
  • Press Ctrl Alt Delete simultaneously.
  • Enter User name and Password.

Changing Passwords
  • Changing passwords
  • Press Ctrl Alt Delete simultaneously.
  • Click on the Change Password button.
  • Type the current password in the Old Password
    dialog box.
  • Type a new password in the New Password dialog
    box.
  • Type the new password again in the Confirm New
    Password dialog box.
  • Click the OK button.

Sticky Keys
  • Using Sticky Keys
  • Sticky Keys can be helpful to those who have
    difficulty pressing two or more keys at once.
    This feature allows keys in
  • command combinations to be pressed separately,
    executing the command when all keys have been
    pressed.
  • Activating Sticky Keys
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on Control Panel.
  • Double-Click on Accessibility Options.
  • Select the Keyboard tab.
  • Click to check the Use StickyKeys checkbox.
  • Click the Apply button.

  • Running multiple applications concurrently
  • Open multiple applications and quickly switch
    between them.

  • Icon A graphical image that represents an
    object.
  • My Computer Allows access to computer
    resources.
  • My Documents A convenient place to store files
    for quick access.
  • Recycle Bin Stores files that have been deleted
    from the hard disk. Files can be retrieved from
    the recycle bin and restored to their original
    location.

Starting A Program
  • Starting a program
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Select All Programs.
  • Select a program. A right arrow next to the
    selection indicates a submenu.
  • Click the program name.

  • Click on Properties.
  • Select the Start Menu tab.
  • Click on the radio button of the desired menu
    style.

  • Title Bar Displays application and file name.
  • Menu Bar Includes options for executing
    commands.
  • Toolbar Contains buttons that provide shortcuts
    to commands in the menus.
  • Status Bar Provides help related to the current
    task.
  • Sizing Buttons Used to enlarge, shrink, or
    close a window.
  • Scrollbar Used to display content that does not
    fit within the window margin.

  • Click the Minimize Button, and the size of
    the window is reduced so that only the button on
    the taskbar remains visible. Use the Minimize
    button to temporarily hide a window but keep the
    program running.

Working With A Window
  • Click the Maximize Button, and the Restore
    Button replaces the Maximize Button. The
    Restore Button reduces the window to its size
    before it was maximized. This is helpful to
    display more than one window at a time, change
    the size of a window, or move the window.

  • List box Displays a list of choices.
  • Radio button Used to select a single option
    from one or more options.

  • Spin control box Contains options from a set of
    ascending or descending values.
  • Slide Adjusts a value in a range.
  • Text box Used to enter information.

Restoring A Deleted File
  • To restore the deleted file to its original
    location,
  • Right-click on the file.
  • Select and click on Restore.

Quick Launch Toolbar
  • Setting up the Quick Launch Toolbar
  • Right-click on the Start button.
  • Click on Properties.
  • Select the Taskbar tab.
  • Click on the Show Quick Launch checkbox.
  • Make sure there are no checks in the Lock the
    taskbar and Hide inactive icons checkboxes.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Left-click on an icon for a file or program on
    the desktop and drag it to the Quick Launch area
    of the taskbar.

  • Right-click on the Desktop.
  • Select Arrange Icons By.
  • Click on one of the following
  • Name - arranged in alphabetical order.
  • Size arranged by file size.
  • Type arranged by type of program.
  • Modified arranged by date and time that the
    shortcut was last modified.
  • Auto Arrange arranged along the left side of
    the screen.
  • Align to Grid arranged along a concealed grid
    on the screen.

System Restart
  • Initiating a System Restart
  • A computer may need to be restarted after
    installing new software or to recover from system
    issues.
  • To shutdown and immediately restart a computer
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on Shutdown.

  • Shutdown - Shuts down the computer.
  • Restart Shuts down and immediately restarts
    the computer.
  • Standby - Powers down components like the
    monitor and hard drive to preserve energy.
