The Central Chapter
Genesis 1-- In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth. 2 And the earth was waste
and void and darkness was upon the face of the
deep and the Spirit of God moved upon the face
of the waters
Rev. 22-- Then he showed me a river of the water
of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne
of God and of the Lamb, 2 in the middle of its
street.
Matthew 1--Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as
follows when His mother Mary had been betrothed
to Joseph, before they came together she was
found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

  • The Incarnation is one of the profound
mysteries and doctrines of the New
    Testament

Our Lord Jesus Christ
  • The Incarnation

6
A Definition, the Meaning of Incarnation
7
Simply, the Incarnation is uniting God and
humanity in the person of Christ
  • (Luke 131-35) And behold, you will conceive in
your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him
Jesus. He will be great and will be called the
Son of the Most High and the Lord God will give
Him the throne of His father David and He will
reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His
    kingdom will have no end.

8
Simply, the Incarnation is uniting God and
humanity in the person of Christ
  • Mary said to the angel, "How can this be,
since I am a virgin? The angel answered and said
to her, "The Holy Spirit will come
    upon you, and the power
    of the
    Most High will over-
    shadow you and for that
    reason the holy Child
    shall
be called the Son of God.

9
Coeternal and coexistent with the Father, Jesus
was fully God and fully human
  • incarnation means flesh
  • chile con carne is chile with meat.

10
Coeternal and coexistent with the Father, Jesus
was fully God and fully human
  • (John 11, 14) In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was
GodAnd the Word became flesh, and dwelt among
us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only
begotten from the Father, full of grace and
    truth.
  • (II Cor. 519) God was in Christ reconciling
    the world to Himself

11
An Explanation Two Natures in One Person
12
The most beautiful and breathtaking nativity
scene is in Phil. 25-7
  • Have this attitude in yourselves which was also
in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the
form of God, did not regard equality with God a
thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking
the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the
    likeness of men.
  • (Mark1045) For even the Son of Man did not come
to be served, but to serve, and to give His life
    a ransom for many."

13
The God-Man as God
14
The Man-God as Man
  • (Heb. 414-16) Therefore, since we have a great
high priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our
confession. For we do not have a high priest who
cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One
who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet
without sin. Therefore let us draw near with
confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may
receive mercy and find grace to help in time of
    need.

Back-to-Back

Matthew 1422-33
  • (vv. 22-23) Immediately He made the disciples
get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the
other side, while He sent the crowds
away. After He had sent the
    crowds away, He
    went up on
    the mountain by Himself to
    pray and when it was
    evening, He was there
    alone.

20
Matthew 1422-33
  • (vv. 24-27) But the boat was already a long
distance from the land, battered by the waves
    for the wind was contrary.

21
  • And in the fourth watch of the night He came
to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples
saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified,
and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in
    fear.
    But immediately
    Jesus spoke to

    them, saying, "Take
    courage, it is I do
    not be afraid."

22
Matthew 1422-33
  • (vv. 28-33) Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is
You, command me to come to You on the water. And
He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat,
    and walked on the water
    and came toward Jesus. But
seeing the wind, he became frightened, and
beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me!

23
  • Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and
took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little
faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the
boat, the wind stopped. And those who were in
    the boat
    worshiped
    Him, saying, "You are
    certainly God's Son!"

24
Luke 822-25
  • Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples
got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let us go
over to the other side of the lake." So they
launched out. But as they were sailing along He
fell asleep and a fierce gale of wind descended
on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to
be in danger. They came to Jesus and woke Him up,
saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And
He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging
waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.

25
Luke 822-25
  • And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They
were fearful and amazed, saying to one another,
"Who then is this, that He commands even the
winds and the water, and they obey Him?"

26
John 1132-36
  • Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was,
she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him,
"Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not
have died. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping,
and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He
was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, and
said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to
Him, "Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. So the
Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"

27
John 1132-36
  • Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was,
she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him,
"Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not
have died. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping,
and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He
was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, and
said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to
Him, "Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. So the
Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"

28
John 1141-44
  • So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His
eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You
have heard Me. I knew that You always hear Me
but because of the people standing around I said
it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.

29
John 1141-44
  • When He had said these things, He cried out
with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth. The man
who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with
    wrappings, and his face
    was wrapped around with a
    cloth. Jesus said to them,
    Unbind him, and let
    him go.

30
Practical Results How Both Bring Benefit
31
The union of humanity and deity is known as
hypostatic union
  • Forgive sins (Mark 27)
  • Understand our deepest needs and weaknesses (Heb.
    27 415)
  • Be a mediator between God and man (Gal. 320 I
    Tim.25).

32
Joseph Barlow
  • Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, To
    herald our salvation
  • He stoops to earththe God of might, Our hope and
    expectation.
  • He comes in human flesh to dwell, Our God with
    us, Immanuel,
  • The night of darkness ending, Our fallen race

Unlike Arthur, Jesus is not human and helpless.
He is God.
  • (Phil. 26-8) who, although He existed in the
form of God, did not regard equality with God a
thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking
the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the
    likeness of men.

37
Unlike Arthur, Jesus is not human and helpless.
He is God.
  • Being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point
of death, even death on a cross.

  • (Luke 737-38) And there was a woman in the city
who was a sinner and when she learned that He
was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's
house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,
and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she
    began to wet His feet
    with her tears, and kept
    wiping them
    with the hair
    of her head, and kissing
    His feet and
    anointing
    them with the perfume.

How do you respond?
  • Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized,
and wash away your sins, calling on His name.
