Title: Social Exchange Theory

1
Social Exchange Theory
  • George C. Homans social behavioral exchange.
  • The exchange of either goods or services.
  • Exchange with those superior or equal to us.
  • Exchanges with those of the same social class.

2
Research ObservationSampling
  • Two different interactions (choice vs.
    non-choice)
  • Male/male and male/female interactions
  • Choice situation, 30 dyads at the IMU
  • Non-choice, 30 dyads at the Sycamore Mall

3
Research Observation Measures
  • The total talk time in both situations
  • Compare talk time in choice vs. non-choice
    situation.
  • Measure talk time with a stop watch
  • Maximum of five minutes for each interaction.

4
Location and Resources
  • Four different stores in the Sycamore Mall
  • IMU food station
  • Must have someone else complete the same test.
  • Keep far enough away, but so they are visible

5
Measuring the Variables
  • Dependent variable is the interaction itself
  • Independent variables (choice and non-choice)
  • Other independent variables (male/male,
    male/female)

6
Reliability and Validity
  • Roommate observed the same situations
  • He looked at a total of 8 dyads (2 from each
    section)
  • Did not check for validity
  • If looking at validity I would use a survey.

7
Results
  • The observation was significant
  • My significant number was .000 which is lt .05
  • Greatest difference (male/female choice and
    male/female non-choice)
  • Total talk time choice groupgt non-choice group

8
Results continued
  • Retest significant score of .087
  • Test is not reliable
  • Maybe because he only looked at 8 dyads
