Language (1828) GOV'ERNMENT, n. Direction

government of our conduct. 1. Control
restraint. Men are apt to neglect the government
of their temper and passions. 2. The exercise of
authority direction and restraint exercised over
the actions of men in communities, societies or
states the administration of public affairs,
according to established constitution, laws and
usages, or by arbitrary edicts. Prussia rose to

and principles by which a nation or state is
governed, or by which individual members of a
body politic are to regulate their social
actions a constitution, either written or
unwritten, by which the rights and duties of
citizens and public officers are prescribed and
defined as a monarchial government, or a
republican government. Thirteen governments thus
founded on the natural authority of the people
alone, without the pretence of miracle or
mystery, are a great point gained in favor of the
rights of mankind. 5. An empire, kingdom or
state any territory over which the right of
sovereignty is extended. 6. The right of

England vested the government of Ireland in the
lord lieutenant. 7. The persons or council which

obsequiousness. 9. Regularity of behavior. Not

I Tim. 1 9-10
  • I Timothy 19 realizing that law is not intended
for a righteous person, but for lawless and
rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinners,
for the unholy and profane, for those who kill
their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 110
    sexually immoral people, practicing homosexuals,
kidnappers, liars, perjurers in fact, for any
who live contrary to sound teaching.

8
Self-government is generated through the power of
Gods Spirit (Galatians 5 16-26)
  • Men fail in self-government

rebellion against God
9
All government begins with personal
self-government
  • Any self-government not in subjection to Christ
as Lord is rebellion leading to chaos and
    confusion
  • The central focus of all realms of government
should be the regenerating work of Jesus Christ.

10
James Madison
  • We have staked that whole future of American
civilization, not upon the power of government,
far from it. We have staked the future of all our
political institutions upon the capacity of
mankind for self-government upon the capacity of
each and all of us to govern ourselves, to
sustain ourselves according to the Ten
    Commandments of God.

John Winthrop quote
  • Diffuse the knowledge of the Bible, and the
hungry will be fed, and the naked clothed.
Diffuse the knowledge of the Bible, and the
stranger will be sheltered, the prisoner visited,
and the sick ministered unto. Diffuse the
knowledge of the Bible, and the Temperance will
rest upon a surer basis than any mere private
pledge or public statute. Diffuse the knowledge
of the Bible, and the peace of the world will be
secured by more substantial safeguards than
either the mutual fear, or the reciprocal
interests, of princes or of people. Diffuse the
knowledge of the Bible, and the day will be
hastened, as it can be hastened in no other way,
when every yoke shall be loosened, and every bond
broken, and when there shall be no more leading
    into captivity . . . . 1

The Christian History of the American Revolution,
    p. 19 quoted in Gary DeMar, God and Government,
    Vol. I, p.17.

the self-government of the people, whether good
or bad. - Gary DeMar, God and Government,

The Bible is opposed to centralism, whether it be
political or religious.
16
The Bible stresses local government in both
Church and State.

Mini-republics
Leaders to be qualified
Leaders to be obeyed
Head Christ
Governmental affairs can best be handled at the
local level where the needs of the people and the
community are known and the consolidation of
power is minimal.
