Title: The Weird Rules of Creativity

1
The Weird Rules of Creativity
  • Robert Sutton

2
Fostering Creativity
  • What fosters creativity doesnt look at all like
    rational management.
  • Managing by getting out of the way (mbgootw?) is
    often the best approach
  • Managing for creativity means taking what we know
about management and standing it on its head.
  • Forget about ROI
  • Ignore whats worked before
  • Get people to fight about ideas
  • Hiring candidates against your gut feel
  • Promote those who dont listen to customers

3
Why these weird ideas work!
  • 3 conditions produce the richest soil for growing
    creative ideas
  • Increasing the range of knowledge
  • Causing people to see old problems in new ways
  • Helping companies break from the past
  • But nurturing creativity can be uncomfortable
  • Research shows that, independent of other
factors, the more often people are exposed to
something, the more positive they feel about it
rare and unfamiliar things promote negative
    evaluations.

4
Weird ideas
  • Decide to do something that will probably
  • Succeed, then convince yourself and everyone else
    that success is certain
  • Fail, the convince yourself and everyone else
    that success is certain
  • Reward
  • Success punish failure and inaction
  • Success and failure punish inaction
  • Seek out
  • And be attentive to people who will evaluate and
    endorse the work
  • Ways to avoid, distract, and bore customers,
critics and anyone who just wants to talk about
    money

5
Weird ideas
  • Think of some
  • Sound or practical things to do and plan to do
    them
  • Ridiculous or impractical things to do and plan
    to do them
  • Find some happy people
  • And make sure they dont fight
  • And get them to fight
  • Take your past successes
  • And replicate them
  • And forget them

6
Weird ideas
  • Hire
  • Fast learners (of the organizational code)
  • Slow learners (of the organizational code)
  • People who make you feel comfortable, whom you
    like
  • People who make you uncomfortable, even those you
    dislike
  • People you (probably) do need
  • People you (probably) dont need

7
Weird ideas
  • Use job interviews
  • To screen candidates and, especially, to recruit
    new employees
  • To get new ideas, not to screen candidates
  • Ignore people
  • Who have never solved the exact problem you face
  • Who have solved the exact problem you face
  • Encourage people
  • To pay attention to and obey their bosses and
    peers
  • To ignore and defy their bosses and peers

8
Summary
  • Efficiency indicates effectiveness in the
implementation and use of proven ideas
  • Creative companies and teams are inefficient (and
    often annoying) places to work
