2What is BRAC?
- Base Realignment and Closure, or, BRAC is a
process of the United States Government directed
at the administration and operation of the Armed
Forces. - BRAC is used to close excess military
installations and realign the total asset
inventory in order to save money on operations
and maintenance. - BRAC rounds occur periodically. The latest round
was in 2005.
3How did Maryland Benefit from the 2005 BRAC
Commission Recommendations?
- Maryland was the single largest winner of the
2005 BRAC round, gaining a net realignment of
9,293 DoD jobs. - The two bases slated to receive the largest
number of DoD jobs from BRAC are Fort Meade and
Aberdeen Proving Ground. - Since the 2005 recommendations, the estimated
numbers of jobs directly and indirectly related
to BRAC has climbed. The latest estimates
indicate that BRAC could generate as many as
60,000 jobs in Maryland from now to 2018.
