Title: Reading Academy

1
Reading Academy
  • Mrs. DeFilippo
  • Miss Garstka

2
What is the Academy of Reading?
  • The Academy of Reading is a comprehensive,
    interactive, multimedia reading program designed
to enhance literacy skills in your child
  • AutoSkill has invested over 20 years into
developing and testing the Academy of Reading!!!

3
How the Academy works
  • The Academy of Reading breaks the complex skill
of reading into manageable tasks, which students
learn progressively in a logical sequence
  • Students are allowed to practice as much as they
    need to master each skill
  • Each student is able to progress at his own pace

4
Why the Academy works
  • The Academy of Reading teaches the sounds, and
patterns of sounds and letter found in our
language so that a student learns to break the
    code of the written word
  • Word attack skills will begin to improve
  • Students will learn each skill until it is
automatic, so no longer will need to think
    consciously about performing these skills
  • Now, conscious effort can be applied to
comprehension strategies as well as other
    thinking processes!

5
Academy of Reading Design Principles
  • The Academy of Reading is designed according to
    three fundamental learning principles
  • 1.) Integrates an Automaticity Model of Learning
  • 2.) Incorporates Important Behavioral Principles
  • 3.) Incorporates a Process Model in Reading

6
Integrates an Automaticity Model of Learning
  • Each complex skill is broken down into a series
    of component subskills
  • Learning each of these subskills to a level of
    rapid automatic responding facilitates
    comprehension, retention, and interpretation of
    material

7
Incorporates Important Behavioral Principles
  • Students are given constant feedback throughout
    the program, including messages of
    congratulations when they are successful
  • Doing so actively engages them in the learning
process, builds confidence, and makes learning
    permanent
  • Corrective feedback provides ongoing learning
    opportunities

8
Incorporates a Process Model in Reading
  • The Academy of Reading quickly establishes a
    basic foundation for reading. Students
systematically work up to higher-level reading
    skills such as comprehension.
  • Students will train in each of the following
    areas
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Reading Subskills
  • Comprehension

9
Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonemic Awareness is the ability to identify and
manipulate the component sounds (or phonemes) of
    language
  • It is imperative that students develop Phonemic
Awareness skills, since this ability is a major
    indicator of future reading proficiency.

10
Reading Subskills
  • Here, students will make gains with the basic
skills they developed in Phonemic Awareness to
    hear and manipulate phonemes
  • Students will develop the visual,
auditory-visual, and oral skills required for
    reading proficiency
  • Once these reading skills are firmly rooted,
students are freed from their tie to the
mechanics of reading and can begin to comprehend
    what they read

11
Comprehension
  • This section helps students develop their
vocabulary and the ability to identify the main
    idea.
  • They will understand relationships, make
inferences, note specific facts and details, and
    retain information
