Title: Bohrs Model of the Atom
1Bohrs Model of the Atom
- We Promise Not To Bohr You.
The description of the electrons arrangement in
an atom is the centerpiece of the modern atomic
model.

- Lived from 1885 to 1962, dieing at age 77.
- Son of Christian Bohr, a professor of physiology
at the University of Copenhagen. - Him and his brother Harald Bohr, a mathematician
were passionate soccer players. - Received his doctorate from Copenhagen
University, then studied under Ernest Rutherford
in the Victoria University of Manchester in
England. - Won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922 for all
his work. - Niels Bohr and his wife Margrethe Nørlund had six
children. Two died young and most of the others
lead good lives. Aage Bohr became a very
successful physicist and also won a Nobel Prize.
3The Model of an Atom
- Based on ideas from Rutherfords model
- Focused more on electrons
- Electrons had energy levels
- Electrons move with constant speed around the
Nucleus like our solar system does.
4Energy Levels
Like a volume control, energy levels can only go
up or down in whole steps.
- Can only change in whole increments, electrons
cannot exist between two energy levels, like a
volume control, only whole steps. - Change with the energy of the atom, goes up with
more energy, level is lowered with less. - When changing to a lower level, energy is let
out. That explains the colors in fireworks. - Different elements release different colors of
light (like fireworks) and emit energy different
ways.
Fireworks, emiting light because of the atoms
losing energy as they lose the energy gained by
heat when exploding.
