General MAE Grad Student Info - I
  • You have access to a mailbox
  • Your Name
  • NCSU Campus Box 7910, Broughton Hall
  • North Carolina State University
  • Raleigh, NC 27695
  • GSSP will not cover student fees
  • (729 each semester)
  • A Travel fund is available once per degree of
    500 for conference travel
  • A Thesis fund is available once per degree of 50
    for printing costs of thesis
  • Find veteran grad students and ask questions

General MAE Grad Student Info - II
  • A POW should be submitted sometime after you
    select an advisor and before you defend
  • Changing advisors will require a new POW
  • You can take any course you want, BUT your
    advisor must approve every course that is listed
    on the POW
  • In the summer, US Citizens will have additional
    taxes taken out of their paycheck
  • GSSP health insurance still covers you, but trips
    to NCSU healthcare requires a one-time fee of 40
  • Most MS minors require only 3 courses in that
    department

  • Make sure your advisor has some level of funding
    before committing to work with them (TA, RA,
    etc.)
  • Each advisor require different amounts of work
  • CLEARLY define your thesis/dissertation project
    with your advisor
  • Have a written document that details the
    agreement
  • Any degree-related items will require their
    signature

Thesis vs. Non-Thesis
  • Non-Thesis MS degrees take more coursework and do
    an independent project for a specific advisor
  • A report is required, but it is not an official
    thesis
  • Thesis MS students take less coursework and write
    an in-depth thesis that must be submitted to the
    university
