Title: Pneumatic Hammer

1
Pneumatic Hammer
2
Pneumatic What?
  • Pneumatic- contains air.
  • Hammer uses pressure as force.
  • Force drives such bits like chisels.

3
Purpose
  • To serve as a replacement for the handheld
    hammer.
  • To speed up production.
  • To give Americans an excuse to be lazy!

4
How It Works
  • High pressured air goes in.
  • Pressure causes piston to move.
  • Piston oscillates back and forth.

5
How It REALLY Works
  • Valve allows air to flow in one direction.
  • Piston causes valve to switch.
  • Air flows in opposite direction.

6
History
  • Pneumatic tools developed as early as 1883.
  • First pneumatic hammer invented by Charles Brady
    King in 1890.
  • Received patent on January 28, 1894.

7
Mechanical Output
  • Given By Company
  • Blows Per Minute 3800 BPM
  • Recommended Air Pressure- 90 PSI
  • Avg. Air Consumption- 3.2 CFM

8
Calculations
  • Essentials
  • FValve FPiston
  • P0V0PV
  • Assumptions
  • Pressure on Piston is always 90psi.
  • Simplification
  • Pressure flows in and out freely.

My Mechanical Output
  • Calculated
  • Period- 0.0179 s
  • Amplitude- 41.9 mm
  • Blows Per Minute- 3350 BPM
  • Force of one blow- 158 N
  • Consumption of Air- 2.79 CFM
