WARNING
  • This Presentation Shows Some Graphic Pictures Of
    Injuries Caused By Pneumatic Nailers

3
Statistics
Injury Claims are on the rise due to an increase
use of Nail Guns.
4
The Most-Common Injuries
  • 43 of Injuries Involve the fingers and hand.
  • 23.3 Involve the foot, thigh, wrist, and knee

5
Statistics
  • Construction workers are the victims of almost
70 of all nail gun accidents.

  • Construction Laborers 9.9
  • Non-Construction Laborers 5.6

6
Accidents
  • Accident investigations show that in most nail
gun accidents the safety spring is not in place.
  • This allows the gun to discharge automatically
    when the trigger is depressed
  • Depressing the nose guard is like cocking a gun.
Pulling the trigger with the gun "cocked" will
    fire it.

Safety Catch
8
Reducing Accidents
  • Do not attempt to use a nail gun unless you have
    been trained or instructed.
  • Read printed instructions and remember what you
    read.
  • Wear safety glasses and hearing protection.
  • Do not point the tool towards yourself or others
  • When leaving the tool unattended, turn off the
air supply and disconnect the air hose.
  • Do not use the nailer in a congested area.

9
Reducing Accidents
  • Do not use a nailer that is defective or modified
  • Maintain a safe, well-balanced position
  • Always be aware of the possible danger to
    yourself and others.
  • Do not use any nail that is not of a type suited
to the nailer and the specific application.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger

10
OSHA Rule
  • If a worker must move beyond 25 feet of the
pressurized tool or the tool is within 25 feet
but outside of the worker's control and line of
sight, the guidelines say that the tool should be
    disconnected from the air supply.

11
Stories
  • Carpenter steps off of a first-floor deck hitting
his knee with his nailer and driving a fastener
    into his leg.

12
Stories
  • The framer who came down a ladder with his finger
on the trigger and hit another worker on the way
down driving a fastener into his friend's head.

13
Stories
  • The guy who was nailing a wall together and
missed the plate and shot a nail into the chest
    of another framer.

14
Stories
  • Two workers were nailing 2 by 4s to a ceiling.
Worker 1 bent over to pick up a 2 by 4 and when
he straightened up, he came into contact with his
    coworker's nailer. A nail entered worker 1's
    head.

15
Stories
Roofer falls off roof lands on worker that is
using a Nail Gun and gets shot 6 times in the
head and neck. He somehow survived.

16
Wishes He Tied Off
17
Stories
  • Worker unintentionally hit his left leg with the
    nail gun.
  • The worker called to the foreman and told him
    what had happened.
  • The foreman tried to remove the nail from the
victim's leg using the claw hammer.

18
Stories
  • The foreman could not extract the nail with the
hammer, so he decided to go to the floor below
and borrow a pair of pliers.
  • When the foreman returned he noticed the victim
still kneeling but slumping over toward the open
    end of the building.
  • Before the foreman could reach him, the victim
fell head first out of the opening onto a
    sand-covered asphalt road

19
Be Careful
  • Pneumatic nailers are one of the most dangerous
    tools in construction.
  • Always be alert when using a nailer
  • Make sure to talk to workers about the importance
    on Pneumatic Nailer Safety.
