What Is D and P?

• Development and Peace is the official development
  organization of the Catholic Church.
• It serves all peoples regardless of religious
  affiliation.
• During the past 39 years D and P has provided
  460 million to finance 14,300 projects in 70
  countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Mission Statement

• D P, a democratic movement for international
  solidarity, supports partners in the Global South
  in the pursuit of alternatives to unjust social,
  political and economic structures.
• It educates the Canadian population about the
  causes of impoverishment of peoples and mobilizes
  action for change.

History

• Development and Peace was established in 1967 by
  the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in
  response to Pope Paul VIs encyclical Popularum
  Progressio (On Development of Peoples).

Founding Principle

• Pope Paul VI said that Development is the new
  word for peace.
• Peace cannot be seen simply as the absence of
  war. It must be built daily, and it must strive
  towards a more perfect justice among human
  beings.

Partnerships

• Funded 13,900 projects worldwide since inception
  (1967).
• Long-term funding relationships with
  local/indigenous organizations dealing with
  issues such as
• Peoples right to education
• Womens equality
• Agrarian reform

• Budget was 24.1 million
• 70 of Development work overseas came from CIDA
  (Canadian Intl Dev. Agency)
