Educational Goals
  • Explore the nature of life in an extreme geologic
    environment
  • Explain robotic life-seeking in extreme
    environments
  • Use near real-time data
  • Serve the needs of middle school level
    museum-goers by seeking curricular connections

4
Interface Goals
  • Immerse learners in the experience of exploring a
    remote environment
  • Easily update with near real time data to achieve
    the learning goals
  • Hold interest of informal learners through an
    easy and appealing interface

5
Target Audience
  • Informal learning/museum audience (with
    unsupported classroom and home users)
  • Generally aimed at middle school level

6
Overall Strategy Media Outlet
  • Strength involvement in ops ( tech synergy)
means we can bring the mission to the public with
    little lag
  • Strategy release news and PSEs as close to
    real-time as possible

7
E/PO Components
  • Website
  • EventScope PSEs (remote experience files)
  • Exhibit at the Adler Planetarium
  • Talks at Carnegie Museum of Natural History
    (broadcast to Adler)

    school program at Queens Library

27
Formal Evaluation
  • January/February 2005

28
Informal Evaluation
  • Meeting Goals
  • Explore the nature of life lt95gt
  • Explain robotic life-seeking lt95gt
  • Use near real-time data lt75gt
  • Serve the needs of middle school level
museum-goers lt85 pending formal eval gt
  • Immerse learners lt95 pending formal evalgt
  • Easily update lt75gt
  • Hold interest ltpending formal evalgt

29
Informal Conclusions
  • Focus and Team Resources
  • Hosting/supporting ops split focus/resources with
    EPO work
  • Solutions
  • more focused scope to EPO work
  • additional EPO personnel
  • reduce data processing time

30
Informal Conclusions
  • Data Processing
  • Processing of various data formats to work with
public interfaces was complex and time consuming
  • Solutions
  • knowledge from past ops will smooth out the
    process for future ops
  • iterate content creation tools
  • pre-made data templates (previously mentioned
data output templates will help enormously)
  • same version of ops and authoring software

31
Informal Conclusions
  • Data transfer from science interfaces to public
    interfaces
  • Public interfaces, authoring tool, and ops
interface are based on same core technology, but
during last ops, older (more stable) versions of
public interfaces were used, leading to
    compatibility issues.
  • Solution
  • new public interfaces (same version as ops
    interfaces) will be used

32
Informal Conclusions
  • Including Data
  • In retrospect, we can see that we didnt include
    all interesting data (FI, spectra)
  • Solutions
  • experience from last ops will improve performance
    on next ops
  • increased participation in science meetings
  • learn more science, ask more questions
  • data return templates (improved science website)

33
Unofficial Response
  • Very Positive!
