1Research on Inclusion
Since 1977 hundreds of rigorous research studies
have been undertaken to determine the
effectiveness of integrating and including
students with severe disabilities. As a result
of a comprehensive review of the extant
literature by myself and my colleagues, we were
unable to identify even a single research article
that that found that segregated service delivery
models are more effective than integrated models
for students with severe disabilities. Professor
Mary Falvey, California State University writing
in TASH journal. Spring 2004

2Inclusion Research Network
- Logistics. Zero budget, minimal admin support.
Driven by NDT when income-generating pressures
permit. Achieved meetings every 3-4 months since
1999 at various parts of the country. 120 on
mailing list, 15-30 attend. Erratic. - Who is it for? Mostly attended by frontline staff
and users with minimal research expertise.
Meetings include presentations and time to seek
advice. Academics may find it too basic. - Inclusion for whom? Brought together all client
groups that share an interest in inclusion
learning disability, schools, mental health,
physical impairment, Surestart, homelessness.

3Inclusion Research Network - Outputs
- Peer support Significant but somewhat intangible.
- Index of measures. IRN project to create an index
of inclusion measures with summary information to
help people locate and use appropriate
instruments. - Analysis of interventions NDT project to name,
classify and critique frontline interventions
that aim to promote inclusion. 110 distinct
interventions in 7 categories. CD-based resource
for CPD, staff training and research into what
works. Contributions from some IRN members. Demo
on my laptop!

4Index of instruments
- List of evaluation instruments
- Proforma for evaluating each instrument (25
completed so far) - Information summarised to show
- Data collection formats
- Demographics
- Social roles
- Relationships and psychological factors.
5Proforma for reviewing inclusion measures
- Are service users involved in design, data
collection, data interpretation, dissemination? - Can it include a subject who is visually
impaired, a non-reader or doesnt use words? - Is the focus on the person themselves, the host
organisation, significant others, staff or the
new network of relationships? - Does it cover demographics, social roles,
relationships, psychological and organisational
factors?
