What is a skillathon?
  • Educational event
  • Learning - by - doing
  • A way for exhibitors to show their understanding
    and knowledge of general health, care, and
    products of their animal project
  • Uses 4 stations with different test material at
    each
  • Improves communication, project, and life skills

Main Skillathon Responsibilities
  • Developed materials for the Swine and Horse
    Skillathons for the 2004 Ohio State Fair
  • Assisted with the development of the remaining
    seven Skillathons for the 2004 Ohio State Fair

  • Prepare 4 stations for each skillathon
  • Skillathon Stations Nutrition, Quality
    Assurance, Meats, Breeds, Genetics, General Care,
    Reproduction, etc.
  • Facilitators, Superintendents

  • Met with committee at beginning of summer to
    discuss improvements
  • Developed a new Genetics station and revised
    stations used in the past
  • Prepared Score Sheets, Station Flyers, and other
    materials
  • Ensured everything was ready for events
  • Helped facilitate and enter scores
  • Assisted with Oustanding Market Exhibitor, Record
    Book, and Skillathon award ceremonies

After preparing the testing materials, I
laminated each piece used in the Skillathons.
This is the completed Genetics station for the
Swine Skillathon.

Dr. Moeller, Dr. Zerby and I revised the meat
station for the Swine Skillathon to further test
the exhibitors.

  • Sent letters to volunteers
  • Did other office work such as filing, copying,
    laminating, answering phones, etc.
  • Prepared Ohio State Fair report after the fair

Reflections
  • I learned most through this internship
  • How to appropriately interact with people
  • How to properly prepare learning materials for
    students from age 9 to age 18
  • How to develop learning materials that are
    effective, yet simple to use
  • Effective and efficient communication and
    leadership skills
  • The different aspects of many livestock
    industries, particularly the Horse and Swine
    industries

  • Very beneficial internship
  • Well organized, goal oriented, and
    straightforward
  • Provided a learning experience that incorporated
    both Animal and Educational aspects
