Title: Video Production

1
Video Production
  • Unit 3

2
Introduction
  • The Video Production Technology prepares students
to work in various aspects of broadcast and
    non-broadcast video production.
  • basic video production functions used in
    commercial, educational, and industrial settings
  • basic audio production functions required in the
    production of video
  • complex videotape editing principles and
applications used in fully scripted and loosely
    structured events
  • communications, both oral and written
  • handling interaction in order to solve problems
    and give creative criticism

3
Introduction to the Basics
  • Video
  • Video generally refers to products which can be
displayed on standard NTSC (National Television
Standards Committee) monitors (Pal in Europe).
  • This means TV or a monitor with a baseband audio
    and video connection.
  • Using NTSC video means that video is played on an
    analog source.

4
Introduction Cont
  • The signal type is carried by the audio/video RCA
type jacks in VCR or camcorders.
  • Baseband video is the video-only information
before it is overlaid onto he radio frequency
carrier wave provided by cable TV or broadcast TV.

5
NTSC Video
  • NTSC video is substantially different from a
    standard computer video.
  • All CRTs produce images by shooting electron
beams at a screen which is coated with
    phosphorescence.
  • The phosphor dots are excited and give off light.
  • The Beams trace lines left to right across the
screen and turn on dots to provide the pattern.
  • The glowing dots fade quickly so the trace has to
be repeated to give the appearance of a
    continuous image.

6
NTSC Video Cont
  • Computer monitors trace the lines from top to
bottom in succession and then repeat, which is
usually done 60 times per second.
  • TV screens are scanned in the same left to right
motion starting at the top. The odd numbered
lines are created first and then the all the even
numbered lines are created. This is called
interlacing. This makes a field/frame rate which
of 30 times per second, for a total of 60 fields
per second, or 30 frames per second.

7
NTSC Video Cont
  • It is this field/frame rate which must be
considered when editing video and when creating
and moving computer based images to video.
  • Moving NTSC video to computers requires a NTSC to
    VGA capture card.

8
Videotape
  • Videotape had been the standard way of recording
video information since the early days to TV.
    This information is analog.
  • When using HiFi (High Fidelity), means that the
video is taken in a format which interleaves or
embeds the audio within independent tracks, it
cannot be edited independently of the video.

9
Digital Video
  • Digital video is a type of video recording system
that works by using a digital, rather than
analog, representation of the video signal.
  • Digital video is most often recorded on tape,
then distributed on optical discs, usually DVDs.
  • There are exceptions, such as camcorders that
record directly to DVDs, Digital8 camcorders
which encode digital video on conventional analog
tapes, and camcorders which record digital video
    on hard disks.

10
Video Editing
  • Editing videotape requires identification of
sequences on one or more source videotapes, and
copying them in the correct sequence onto a new
master tape. The is the old school style.
  • In recent years digital video has moved onto the
    market replacing analog video.
  • This makes life a lot easier, and clips can be
edited directly on your home computer.
  • It allows for very specific editing, down to each
frame. It also allows you to manipulate the
video, by incorporating titles, and effects
    directly to the clip.
  • This can all be done with windows movie maker,
which comes with all versions of Windows XP
