History of NFWSC
  • Original focus was to help farm working families
    with their daily primary needs.
  • Established NFWSC, Inc. was established in 1966
    by Cesar E. Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
  • Three program funds Communications, Housing, and
    Education.
  • Goal is to serve over a million Latino families
    by 2020.

Organizations Vision Commitment to
Services
  • NFWSC wanted to provide our families/residents
    more than just housing.
  • They wanted to create an lasting impact that
    could help break the cycle of poverty.
  • Internal research indicated that the large number
    of residents were children and teens from 0-17
    years.
  • The NFWSC Executive Team decided that the
    organization would focus on academic enrichment
    programming for school-age children.
  • NFWSC began a pilot program in Phoenix, AZ.
    utilizing an Americorps VISTA member to help
    implement a basic program.
  • NFWSC committed to providing monetary resources
    from their general fund which was 300,000.

Objective, and Vision
  • The Si Se Puede Learning Center is an
    after-school program that provides educational
  • support for families that reside on NFWSC, Inc.
    properties throughout the Southwest
  • region of the United States.
  • Mission
  • The NFWSC- Community Services will offer youth,
    teens, families,
  • the opportunity to empower themselves to learn,
    achieve, and grow.
  • We are committed in providing quality programs
    that emphasize education,
  • leadership, and life skills throughout every
    NFWSC affordable housing
  • community.
  • Objective
  • Youth and teens are safe, productive and joyful
    Youth and teens are well prepared for
  • learning, school, and life. Families are
    empowered to make better choices.
  • Vision
  • Giving youth the opportunity to empower
    themselves and achieve success in school,
  • home, and in their community!

Program Focus
  • Program Participants
  • The program serves children in grades
    Kindergarten through 6th.
  • Program Hours, Days, and Seasons
  • After-school hours from 300-730 p.m., Monday -
    Friday.
  • Summer hours vary from site to site.
  • Core Program Components
  • Homework Assistance, Literacy, Math, Technology,
    and
  • Leadership Development.
  • Program Implementation by
  • Americorps VISTAs, Americorps National Direct
    Members,
  • College Work-Study Students, and community
    volunteers.
  • Children served over 625 for the year.

Volunteer Program
  • Our Volunteer Program is part of our
    sustainability for our Community Services
    division.
  • We are grant recipients through the National
    Corporation of Community Services Americorps
    National Direct VISTA.
  • We utilize volunteers to operate, implement, and
    manage the
  • Si Se Puede Learning Center and the on-site
    computer labs.
  • ViSTAs serve as Resident Service Coordinators.
    They are recruited nationally, utilzing recent
    college graduates.
  • Americorps members serve as Resident Activity
    Leaders. They are recruited locally, college
    students.
  • Recruit, Interview, Train, and Retain.

  • Annual Budget 950,000
  • Funding General Fund, NCCS, Private Foundations
    grants.
  • Start-up a SSPLC- 15,000
