What is EPSCoR?Experimental Program to Stimulate
Competitive Research
EPSCoR is a merit based science and technology
(ST) initiative to improve the research capacity
capability and competitiveness in states that
historically have not received significant
federal research and development (RD) funding.
17
Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR Outreach Initiatives
http//okepscor.org/ Graduate Fellowships
Graduate students per year are recruited to
Oklahoma universities by providing 7,500
supplements to university research and teaching
assistantships. Research Day at the Capitol An
annual event to showcase selected undergraduate
student research to the state legislature. Underg
raduate Research Day An annual event for the
broad community of undergraduate students to
present their research to the colleagues.

Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation
(LSAMP) Program
This NSF program is aimed at increasing the
quality and quantity of students successfully
completing science, mathematics, engineering, and
technology (SMET) baccalaureate degree programs,
and increasing the number of students in SMET
graduate programs. LSAMP supports sustained and
comprehensive approaches that facilitate
achievement of the long-term goal of increasing
the number of students who earn doctorates in
SMET fields, particularly those from populations
underrepresented in SMET fields. Principal
Investigator at OSU Dr. Earl Mitchell,
Associate Vice President for Multicultural
Affairs

Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the
Directorate for Biological Sciences
(DDIG) http//www.nsf.gov/pubs/2002/nsf02173/nsf02
173.htm Grants provide partial support of
doctoral dissertation research in order to
improve the overall quality of the research, to
allow doctoral candidates to conduct research in
specialized facilities or field settings away
from the home campus, and to provide
opportunities for greater diversity in collecting
and creativity in analyzing data than would
otherwise be possible using only locally
available resources. Proposal submitted by
students doctoral thesis advisor. Deadline is
November, 2004.

Research Experience for Undergraduates
(REU) http//www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/reu/sta
rt.htm
An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so
undergraduates who work in the research programs
of the host institution. Each student is
associated with a specific research project,
working closely with faculty and other
researchers. Students are granted stipends and,
in many cases, assistance with housing and
travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF
funds must be citizens or permanent residents of
the United States or its possessions. An REU Site
may be at either a US or foreign
location. University Deadline June 2, 2004
