940,000 sq.km. With population of 34m (projected
to the year 2002)

- Disseminating Censuses and surveys results and
publications - Performing statistical consultancy to private
firms, NGOs and public sector (s)

- 56 computers ( PCs and Laptops)
- 4 Servers(Compaq)
- 5 Printers ( HP Lazer jet)
- 3 Overhead projectors and 2 PPP
- NB we also keep and use other resources from
different project- donors like DFID,UNFPA UNICEF
etc.

- Used in Censuses and surveys for
- Data capture,processing,and analysis
- Lotus 123, dBase, SAS, ISSA, IMPS, SPSS, OMR,
Teleform, Access, Excel and Word - ( Both for Dos and Windows)
7Human Resources
- 3 computer specialists (with formal training).
- 49 Statisticians with computer experience at
different levels - analysts. - More than 50 non-degree holders with a fairly
computer knowledge. - Few programmers( with non-formal training).
8My department and ICT
- Conducts Population and Housing
censuses,Household budget survey ,TKAPs,TSAs,
Welfare indicators (cwiq), Demographic and health
surveys,and many more - Mostly, we use Questionnaire for data collection
- IMPS,ISSA,(OMR currently introduced) for data
capture - and SPSS, ISSA for processing and analysis
9ICT-TRAINING PROGRAMS IN THE
ORGANIZATION
- Subjective to Project/research attached staff
- Training mainly for data keying
- Few staff go abroad for training prior to
undertaking of a survey e.g Pop.census - JICA is currently revising and setting up ICT
strategies
10NEEDS FOR ICT TRAINING (with existing problems)
- Diversification of Basic ICT programs to all
statisticians - Brush-up courses for the dynamic advanced
technology (IMPS/CSPro, Dreamer weaver, Advanced
Power point etc) - Directors and managers introduced to ICT
- All staff members to be equipped with basic word
processing and spread sheets (Ms word, Excel
,Access etc)

- Present action plan to top management
- Evaluate existing gaps Vs advanced ICT
- Act in descending pattern starting with the ICT
trained staff - Strengthen the just introduced organization Web
site

- As agent, more reliable clients
- Able to undertake many surveys at a time
- Improve Data processing budget
12In a nutshell
- Tanzania is geographically big,with high pop.so
needs strengthening in ICT - There is a need to change from the current
statistical performances in my organization. - NBS has few staff,so ICT will cover the gap
- I do expect to equip my organinzation with
advanced ICT in SPSS, IMPS/CSPro, GIS, Web
designs ppt etc
