MISSION STATEMENT
- Character Education in the Okoboji Schools will
provide opportunities to build a foundation for
the development of citizens of character. The
school will work with the community, students,
and family to support, model and promote ethical
values that lead to personal accountability for
the benefit of self and society.
3What is Character Counts?
- CHARACTER COUNTS! is a nonprofit, nonpartisan,
nonsectarian character education framework that
teaches the Six Pillars of Character
trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,
fairness, caring and citizenship. The CHARACTER
COUNTS! Coalition includes thousands of schools,
communities, and non-profit organizations.

of - the CHARACTER COUNTS! youth-ethics initiative. Â

10Golden Oldies
- One Saturday each month a group of students go
to the nursing home to play games and do crafts
with the residents.
11Volunteering shows character, even if it is just
helping out in the concession stand.
12High School peers model the best of Character all
the time. This is Dani Jo, a high school peer,
helping with Rock and Prevention.
13Students collected money to make Christmas
special for some local families. The students
took part of a day to buy the gifts for the Adopt
- a - Family project.
14High School friends help out at the elementary
school through the Peer Helper and Special Friend
Programs
Special relationships are forged between the
children and their high school friends. The
programs emphasize positive role modeling.
15The 2nd graders decorated sacks for the high
school FFA students to fill with lunches for area
farmers during harvest.
16Doing the Right Thing All the Time!Here is
Kendra helping at the OMS book fair.
17Bleacher Creatures
- Students help the janitorial staff by picking up
the bleacher areas after home sporting events.

- began a local recycling project at school.

20Community partners work together with our school
to help us build and practice our character
skills.
4th Grade TRRFCC students spend a lunch hour
working at McDonalds of Okoboji. McDonalds
also sponsors an annual family night at the
restaurant.
21Kiwanis sponsored OHS Key, OES K Kids and OMS
Builders Clubs who all perform community
service. Here OMS Builders deliver cookies baked
by the Key and K Kids Clubs to organizations
that provide community service.
22Cookie Appreciation Project
The high school Key Club partnered with the
middle school Builders Club and the elementary K
Kids to bake and deliver cookies of appreciation
to the city officials who serve the public.
23Bloodmobile
- Student council members work with the Siouxland
Blood Bank and organize a local blood drive for
high school students.
24We serve our community at OES with the Classroom
of Character Service Learning Project.
2nd Grade students help with the animals at the
Humane Society of Northwest Iowa throughout the
year.
25We tell our friends about our projects at an
all-school assembly so that everyone can see how
much we care!
Meals on Wheels friend and Iowas oldest
resident, Letitia Lawson, shares her wisdom on
character.
26We use character to Gang Up on Drug and Alcohol

32We catch others using character and pass it on
with Character Cards.
33Planting the seeds of character is everybodys
job.
K-4 Students with high school helpers, parents,
and grandparents planted tulips in our courtyard
as a promise to be drug free.
34We brag about our strengths, and we are
consistently working on our weaknesses.
35We recognize our accomplishments at OES through a
monthly character awards assembly.
Monthly TRRFCC Kids of Character and E for Effort
are presented. Students are singing and signing a
drug free and patriotic song led by Mrs. Ellis.
36Students are nominated by their teachers and
recognized during morning announcements.
37Kids of Character
- Is a partnership with KUOO/KUQQ to recognize
students who exemplify one or more of the 6
pillars of character. Anyone may nominate a
student and forms may be picked up at local
businesses. The students receive a certificate
and the award is announced during the pre-game
show of Okoboji sporting events broadcasted on
the radio.
