  navigation were substituted for arrival, or
  battle for victory, or wooing for marriage, or in
  general the means for the end. But even in this
  present life, there is danger in the very concept
  of religion. It carries the suggestion that this
  is one more department of life, an extra
  department added to the economic, the social, the
  intellectual, the recreational, and all the rest

• Has any nation ever exchanged its gods for
  another god, even though its gods are nothing?
  Yet my people have exchanged their glorious God
  for worthless idols! The heavens are shocked at
  such a thing and shrink back in horror and
  dismay, says the Lord. For my people have done
  two evil things They have forsaken me the
  fountain of living water. And they have dug for
  themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no
  water at all!

• Have you seen what fickle Israel does? Like a
  wife who commits adultery, Israel has worshiped
  other gods on every hill and under every green
  tree. I thought that after she had done all this
  she would return to me. But she did not come
  back. And though her faithless sister saw this,
  she paid no attention. She saw that I had
  divorced faithless Israel and sent her away.

• But now Judah, too, has left me and given herself
  to prostitution. Israel treated it all so lightly
  she thought nothing of committing adultery by
  worshiping idols made of wood and stone. So now
  the land has been greatly defiled. But in spite
  of all this, her faithless sister Judah has never
  sincerely returned to me. She has only pretended
  to be sorry, says the Lord.
