Title: Tent Folding

1
Tent Folding
  • Take care of your equipment and it will take care
    of you!

2
Tent Inspection Form
  • Fill out a Tent Inspection form.
  • If everything is going according to plan, an
inspection form will be rolled up inside the tent
when you open it for cleaning. If not, these are
available on the Troop 248 Website you passed
the link for it to get here!
  • The TOP half is where you record anything that
needs service or repair. Check off the items as
you inspect them and make notes of anything that
    is missing or needs repair
  • Fill out the BOTTOM of the form. If it was
already in the tent, the names of the scouts who
used it last will be filled in the blanks along
with the name of the trek. Sign and date the
form under This Tent Cleaned By

3
Sign your work!
  • Cut the form in half
  • Keep the TOP of the form out so you can give it
to the troop Quartermaster when you turn in the
tent (put it in your Scout Handbook and bring it
    to the next meeting)
  • The BOTTOM half of the form goes in one of the
mesh storage pockets inside the tent (under the
    side windows)

4
Prepare to deflate
  • Unzip the rear vent (inside at the top)
  • Unzip the door about half way
  • Zip the door screen closed
  • Release the Velcro loops securing the rain fly to
the main poles (one at each corner, about ½ way
    up)

5
Side clips and top bow
  • Release the clips holding the tent body to the
    main poles
  • The tent is now hanging by the top fabric strap

Untie the bow at the top
6
Down it goes!
  • Pull the fabric strap to untie the bow and the
    tent deflates
  • This is why you tie it in a bow when setting up
    the tent!
  • Reach under the rain fly and untie the bow on the
    top rain fly pole
  • Leave the pole in place until later

7
Rain fly stakes(2) and corner stakes(2)
  • Slacken the side ropes on the rain fly and use
the rope to help pull up the stake
  • Put these two stakes in the stake bag
  • On one side of the tent, grasp the tent floor and
corner ring and pull up the stakes on ONE SIDE
ONLY You are mostly pulling the ring so you
dont damage the tent floor fabric

8
Main poles and its flat!
  • Take the main poles off the pins on the corner
rings where you removed the stakes
  • This is the fun part
  • The poles will simply fall over and the rain fly
    collapses over the tent body

9
Fold and store the poles
  • The rain fly collapses on top of the tent body
  • The real value of this is if you have to set it
up in the rain on the next trek. The rain fly
will be on top when you unroll the tent!
  • Pull the two main poles out and collapse them.
Store them in the pole bag

10
Straighten up the rain fly
  • The rain fly pole is still in place. Use it to
pull the rain fly away from the side with the
stakes still in place, and then back toward the
stakes. This gets all of the rain fly material
    centered over the tent body

11
Fold in half / fold more than half
  • Fold one side to exactly the middle of the tent
  • Fold it half way
  • Take the stakes out of the other two corners and
store them in the stake bag
  • There should now be six (6) stakes in the bag!
  • Fold the other side past half way
  • Fold it more than half

12
Fold in half and remove rain fly pole
  • Fold once more, this time exactly in half
  • It will fit in the bag!
  • Remember the pole in the top of the rain fly?
  • Locate the pole, take the end out of the fabric
    pocket and pull it out
  • Fold the rain fly pole and store it in the pole
    bag

13
Two bags fold and roll!
  • Place the stake bag and pole bag across the
folded tent an arms length from one end
  • Fold the tent over the pole bag
  • Use the bags to help you start to roll the tent

14
Squeeze out and protect the fabric
  • Roll all the way to the end
  • Go slow at the end to let the trapped air seep
    out
  • Unroll about two feet
  • Fold the unrolled end back so that the soft
    fabric will be protected
  • Re-roll the tent to the end

15
Bag it and tie a bow!
  • Hold the rolled tent and pull the bag onto it
    like putting on a sock
  • If you try to drop the tent into the bag, it
    unrolls!
  • Pull the draw string tight and tie in an overhand
    slip knot
  • The ends should be tied together in a square knot

16
Turn in your equipment!
  • At the next meeting, give the tent and the top
part of the inspection form to the Quartermaster
  • Give the Quartermaster a chance to check you off
the list and make sure he understands any notes
you wrote on the inspection form
  • Do NOT just pile up the equipment
  • The Quartermaster should be available to check in
    your gear
