  • Historical Highlights
  • DMIP initial meeting March 1998 (St. Petersburg)
  • DMIP now active for 6 years
  • Development of ACSYS Data and Information System
(ADIS) as a clearinghouse for project data and
    information
  • Provides data management coordination with other
    WCRP projects
  • Assists other ACSYS Panels with data management
    related activities
  • Provides recommendations to SSG on project data
    management

  • Functions of the ACSYS Data and Information
    System (ADIS)
  • Provide information about and access to ACSYS and
    related datasets and information (location,
discipline, time, archive source, author, contact
    information, etc)
  • Establish single point of contact for information
    on ACSYS
  • Develop and maintain meta-database describing
datasets and related information, keeping current
on the status of data collection campaigns and
the status of ACSYS data projects
  • Facilitate communication between user groups,
    information providers, and collaborating
    scientists
  • Remain reference site for ACSYS Project legacy

6
  • ADIS Holdings and Reference Materials Available
  • 17 reports for ACSYS Project (Past issues of
ACSYS Arctic Forecast and Ice and Climate News)
  • 418 links to other archive centers,
    organizations, institutions and others involved
    in arctic research or activities
  • 6130 publication references on research and
activities in the Arctic (Journals, Conference
    volumes, etc.)
  • 1012 datasets from ACSYS and ACSYS related
projects during the 10 year lifetime
  • 61 Reports from ACSYS meetings and sponsored
    gatherings

data base
  • 2-year project, IACPO and MMBI (1998 2000)
  • Funding European Polar Board, Norwegian
    Transport Fate Program
  • T-S profiles, 1898 1998, good coverage after
    1920

  • DMIP Highlights for ACSYS Conference
  • Development of consistent support for WCRP
    component began in 1998
  • Development of single point of contact for
    general information (publications, organization,
etc.) and dataset information on ACSYS (ADIS web
    site)
  • Preparation of ACSYS Legacy and ACSYS Final
    Conference Summary CDs
  • Facilitate the preparation of special ACSYS
datasets (e.g. historical sea ice charts,
    BarKode, runoff)

16
  • ACSYS Project Legacy CDs
  • To be distributed after the Final ACSYS
    Conference and includes abstracts, publications,
    reports, organization, etc.
  • A second CD will be the proceedings of the
    conference including extended abstracts and
    presentations
  • Questionnaire to gain more data/information
about ACSYS datasets, papers, etc. to be
distributed prior to and during conference

17
The Future for DMIP in the Support of CliC
  • Develop and maintain the Data and information
  • Service for CliC (DISC)
  • Coordinate data management related activities
with other WCRP programmes (e.g. GEWEX, CLIVAR)
  • Develop and maintain links with global data
centers responsible for cryospheric data and
    information
  • Utilize new capabilities in data archive exchange
    interoperability including metadata inventories,
GIS applications, search tools and world wide web
    capabilities

20
  • Continuing Development of DISC Services
  • Establish key contacts in all of the data
    centres
  • where cryospheric data is managed to develop
inventory of available data and information
  • Develop list of researchers, organizations etc.
    that
  • create and/or use cryospheric data
  • Forum for CliC data providers, operators/managers
    and researchers on DISC
  • Facilitate getting CliC relevant data to a data
    centre
  • Agreed to continue with metadata about datasets
    in DISC

21
  • Continuing Development of DISC (Services)
  • Prepare reference inventory of journals focusing
    on cryosphere
  • Require continuing input from the science and
    monitoring
  • community as well as staff effort to maintain a
    complete
  • set of information.
  • DISC development must be user driven

22
  • How do we respond to the data management
    challenges of CliC?
  • The Philosophy
  • Ensure a global perspective
  • Keep an interdisciplinary view
  • Facilitate international data and information
    exchange
  • Take advantage of the new tools at our disposal
  • Tap the knowledge and capabilities of the
    international partners
  • Cooperate/collaborate with other projects and
    programs
  • The Implementation (next steps)
  • Data management support in CliC must be user
    driven
  • Establish contacts at the cryospheric data
    centers
  • Provide a forum on DISC for researchers, data
    providers and managers
  • Encourage use of metadata standards for CliC
    datasets
  • Facilitate the preparation of high priority CliC
    datasets
