History Before Freeports development, West End
was the epicenter of the logging industry in the
Bahamas and a playground for the affluent in the
1920s. Things changed in the 1950s when Wallace
Groves, an American financier, imagined the
areas future as a tax-free shipping port.

The local government agreed, and a planned city
complete with an airport, waterways, roads, and
utilities evolved. This was the city of Freeport,
and Lucaya followed later. The recent
hurricanes and economic troubles have taken their

resorts on the island now.

Today Since those early days, however, not much
else has changed. Visitors will see plenty of
fishing settlements, although they now have
better roads and electricity.

settlement. Little villages with
brightly-painted concrete-block houses and white
