Title: Is the Philippines Ready for Climate Change

1
Is the Philippines Readyfor Climate Change?
  • Ben S. Malayang III

2
My Answer
  • No
  • For three reasons

3
Why Were Not Ready
  • Were not presently building up the needed
resources to meet the costs to adequately address
the risks associated with climate change
  • The costs would seem too high for our present
    capabilities as a nation
  • There appears to be no build up of political will
    to address the risks

4
Risks Linked to Climate Change
  • Sea level rise (SLR)
  • Salt Water Intrusion (SWI)
  • Acidification of Oceans
  • Altered patterns ( regularity) of rainfall
    drought events (e.g., ENSO patterns)
  • Loss of biodiversity
  • Altered political social movements
    human-environment dynamics

7
Complicating Factors
  • The momentum of climate change is likely to
linger for over 1-2 hundred years (if not more)
e.g., the albedo effect on oceans
  • Most politicians leaders (especially local ones
who need to lead adaptation efforts) seem not
really understanding (nor caring) about the
    seriousness of whats before us
  • Our society today seems not willing to address
two exogenous drivers of climate change high
rapid population growth, and the need to do away
with the most serious ( widespread) contributor
    to climate change large-scale C-based
    manufacturing lifestyles (e.g., widespread
    expanding use of jet engines)

8
Again, the Question
  • Are we in the Philippines -- and in Dumaguete
    -- ready for climate change?

9
Sadly, NO.
