SLIPS AND TRIP CAMPAIGN Following on from the
Slip assessment and the Health and Safety meeting
there is a team of people meeting to discuss
Slips and Trips and ways which we can prevent
accidents happening. The potential for a slip
will depend on the footwear worn the nature of
the floor surface and the presence of any
contamination. Taking 1 or all of these elements
away will give the solution to less slips and
trips. If you have any comments that would help
the campaign please email the Facilities and
Safety Office.
- WEEE REGULATIONS
- Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
is the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.
The WEEE Regulations aim to reduce the amount of
this waste going to landfill, and increase
recovery and recycling rates. - From July 2007 Students Unions will be obligated
under the new regulations. - Unions must segregate electrical, electronic
equipment (EEE) from normal waste. - Examples of EEE
- IT and telecoms equipment
- Printers
- Copying equipment
- Cordless telephones
- Cellular telephones
- Audiovisual and lighting equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools
- Some items such as fridges, computer monitors,
fluorescent tubes and batteries are for special
disposal as per the hazardous Waste Regulations
July 2005. - For disposal of any of these items please contact
the Facilities and Safety Office where we will
try and reuse the item by passing on unwanted
working EEE to local charities or disposing of
the items safely.
ACCIDENT PREVENTION SLIP ASSESSMENT Using a slip
meter a number of readings were taken in areas
where accidents had already happened or where
there were areas identified as high risk. These
results have been analysed and the detailed
assessment has been produced. This can be found
on the P drive Health and Safety\Health and
Safety Information\accident prevention Everyone
has a role in keeping the workspace clean and
dealing with spillages as they occur, thus
avoiding a potential accident or near miss.
Also the process of cleaning can make the area
more hazardous therefore adequate signage should
be put out or barriers to prevent people entering
the area. From the HSE A positive attitude
towards Health and Safety a See it, sort it!
mentality can reduce the risk of slip and trip
accidents, eg dealing with a spillage, instead of
waiting for someone else to deal with it!

PINK SACK RECYCLING SCHEME The University has
sent off 40 tonnes of paper and thin card for
recycling since 11th December 2006. There is
also another 10 tonnes in the blue paper banks
which will be emptied soon. With 50 tonnes being
recycled every 3 months, this makes a potential
200 tonnes per annum which is really good. In
addition to this, there's also the shredded paper
from Gibbet Hill which is being collected by
Twycross Zoo. The Students Union total pink
sacks up to and including 30th March were 170
sacks. Added to which is an estimate of the
unknown amounts of The Boar and other
publications which have been placed in the
nearest paper bank and the cardboard which goes
into the Costcutters compactor. Gives us a total
of 2.25 tonnes for the 6 weeks for which figures
exist. Just to give you an idea one tonne of
paper recycled saves 17 trees therefore Number
of trees saved 34 Thank you for your support,
that's not too bad, for the first few weeks. Can
you do better? Please remember you should try
to get the sack weights up (or down) to 11kg. No
paper should be put in waste bins and bulk items
such as large numbers of newspapers, brochures
and magazines should go into the paper banks.
