• In the conflict between Guelfs and Ghibellines
  Dante fought for the Guelfs
• Joined medical association to take part in
  politics
• 1285 1302 held several public offices
• While his term of office the conflict between
  Black and White Guelfs accumulates
• Because of Dante, leaders of both groups got
  banned

• By reason of pope Boniface VIII. the leaders of
  the Black Guelfs came back in 1301
• In 1302 Dante was banned by them from Florence
  for two years
• At first he spent the years of exile in Verona
  and the Toscana, after that he lived in northern
  Italy
• Around 1309 he visited Paris

  of an united europe under one enlightened and
  great emperor (Monarchia)
• He urged the rulers of Italy to accept the power
  of Heinrich VII to end the wars between the
  italian city states without success

• In 1315 Florence made Dante the offer to come
  back, but he refused
• In the same year, he and his sons were condemned
  to death
• The rest of his life he spent on duty of Guido da
  Polenta
• He died because of an affection which he got on a
  diplomatic mission
