Enriching Teaching Learning
  • Some Free Online Tools Resources

Paul Richardson
2
Purpose of the session
  • To provide an update on NLN and NGfL
  • Show how you can get support from the RSC, and
    others
  • Explore some ways of using Moodle

3
The National Learning Network (NLN)
  • Funded by the LSC (the Welsh Assembly Government
    in Wales)
  • The NLN Materials are small, flexible
    'bite-sized' episodes of learning.
  • The materials give learners things to do and a
chance to think for themselves. They are designed
to be fun. Learners can make mistakes but can try
    again.

4
  • Since the NLN programme first began in 1999, the
NLN Materials have grown to nearly 1,000 hours of
e-learning materials across a wide range of
subjects from Floristry to Business Studies.
Spanning the curriculum, they can easily be
fitted into existing teaching and learning.
  • Access to the materials is available through a
range of portals, depending on which post-16
sector you are a member of. You can link to these
    portals from this website.

5
  • The materials were created by commercial
developers, in partnership with subject matter
experts and a wide range of colleges and adult
    and community learning experts.
  • All the materials have been trialled by tutors
and students and tested for accessibility at the
Royal National College of the Blind in Hereford.

Top tips for teachers (1)
  • Find out what materials are there, and find short
'chunks' which are relevant to how you teach your
    subject.
  • Become familiar with relevant learning objects
and know how to use them alongside your own
    materials and resources.
  • Link the materials to your schemes of work and be
aware of the varied ways in which the materials
can be embedded into the learning process.

11
Top tips for teachers (2)
  • Make sure they are easy to access and use - check
they can be accessed from your teaching area.
  • Be aware that there may be relevant materials
apart from those listed under your subject area.
  • Study the format of the learning objects and look
at them as a source of ideas for re-using both
the learning objects and your current coursework
    in more interesting ways.
