SINTRA
2Sintra is known for its many 19th-century
Romantic architectural monuments, which has
resulted in its classification as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Although its heritage in buildings
and nature is the most visible face of the
historic individuality of Sintra, a whole
literary heritage has made the area a legendary
reference in Portuguese culture. It has become a
major tourist centre, visited by many
day-trippers who travel from the capital Lisbon

6"A street that takes you to the heart of
Sintra" Volta do Duche is one of the best-known
areas in Sintra. It's also the namesake for the
main street of Vila Velha, or old town, where a
public bath was once located. Along the street,
there is a wall that frames a vast garden and
some say that both rain and irrigation water that
ran down this wall contributed to the streets
name, which means 'shower's turn'.
Pessoa by Élio Oliviera
7Volta do Duche offers lovely views over the
picturesque town centre and there is a sculpture
park along the street
