Tachileik Shwedagon Pagoda
Presenter NotesPagodas in Burma (or Myanmar) are tiered
structures for Buddhist religious purposes
Theravada Buddhism is the religion of the
majority of Burma's population (90). In all
parts of the country where the Burmese people
live there are pagodas and Buddhist monasteries.
The graceful tapering shape of a pagoda painted
white or gilded to a shining gold, is a basic
part of any Burmese landscape. Burma is often
called the "Land of Pagodas".

Presenter NotesIt is the most important duty of all Burmese
parents to make sure their sons are admitted to
the Buddhist Sangha by performing a shinbyu
ceremony once they have reached the age of seven
or older. A symbolic procession and ceremony of
exchanging princely attire with that of an
ascetic follows the example of the historical
Buddha. He was born a royal prince called
Siddartha Gautama, but left his palace on
horse-back followed by his groom Chanda in search
of the Four Noble Truths and to attain Nirvana,
after he found out that life is made up of
suffering (dukkha) and the notion of self is
merely an illusion (anatta or non-self) when one
day he saw the 'Four Great Signs - the old, the
sick, the dead, and the ascetic - in the royal
gardens.
All Buddhists are required to keep the basic Five
Precepts, and novices are expected to keep the
Ten Precepts. Parent would expect them to stay at
the monastery immersed in the teachings of the
Buddha as members of the Sangha for a few weeks
or longer, at least for the duration of Thingyan.
They will have another opportunity to join the
Sangha at the age of 20, taking the upasampada
ordination, to become a fully fledged monk,
keeping the 220 precepts of the full monastic
rules (Patimokkha), and perhaps remain a monk for
life.

Presenter NotesShwedagon Pagoda is one of the most popular site
to visit when you get to Tachileik. It is
situated on the highest hill in town and it
preserves the vibrant heritage of Buddhism.
Shwedagon--the name itself means Golden Pagoda
the pagoda is constructed of tons of pure gold
and gems. Local people cherish the site as a part
of their national identity. There is no entrance
fees, but if you are willing to do some merit and
'dhana', there are some monks on the site. The
site is enchanting, beautiful, and peaceful. For
travelers who want some tranquil and
energy-recharging time, Shwedagon Pagoda is a
good place to go it is also a wonderful place to
meditate. At night time, the Shwedagon Pagoda
stands elegantly with bright shinning lights
reflecting the golden pagoda "local people will
say It shins like a bright golden moon."

Presenter NotesAnd most amazingly about these below smaller
golden Buddha statues, are that their faces
eyes will travel the direction youre going
e.g. if youre seeing the Buddha on his left side
now, the Buddha will be facing you at his left.
And if you move towards the right side, the
Buddhas face will follow you in the right
direction, which means that the Buddhas face
will also be directed at you even if
youre standing on his right side next!
