2Capri is an island located in the Tyrrhenian
Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south
side of the Gulf of Naples. The main
town Capri that is located on the island shares
the name. It has been a resort since the time of
the Roman Republic
3The town of Capri is a commune and the island's
main population centre. From Marina Grande, a
funicular goes up to Capri Town, and boats leave
for the Blue Grotto. The fourth store to the
right of the funicular provides baggage storage
for 2.50/day per bag, from 830-600.
4Getting to Capri
5The Marina of Capri is located on northern shore
of the Island, at Marina Grande
6The marina is adjacent to the commercial port
and both are located inside a natural bay which
provides shelter from the wind
7The Marina of Capri is connected to the center of
Capri town by a funicular, which transports
passengers to the Piazzetta in four minutes
8Near the marina, there are bus stops and taxi
stands. Restaurants, cafés, and grocery shops are
also nearby
9At the height of summer, up to 15,000 visitors
arrive each day, many of them cruise ship
passengers and package tourists who are led
around in big groups. Eighty per cent of them are
day-trippers who arrive by boat from Naples and
Sorrento, clogging the narrow alleyways and tiny
piazzas of the islands main settlement, also
called Capri, before returning to the mainland

13Capri, known in Greek mythology as the isle of
the sirens, was a favored resort of the Roman
emperors
14Most notoriously, the emperor Tiberius had his
villa on the island, the location (supposedly) of
debauched orgies
15Those who displeased the emperor were flung to
their deaths from the cliffs

24In the island dialect spoken on Capri, it's
called chiazza. On maps, Piazza Umberto 1. But
the entire rest of the world knows it as La
Piazzetta. This bustling square is the center of
Capri, the focal point of island life. It's
impossible to visit without passing through it,
and hard not to stop once there for at least a
quick espresso. The nickname Piazzetta comes from
its rather diminuitive size this rectangle is
just a few square meters, almost all of which are
covered by bright cafè tables
25The Torre del Orologio is doubtless the most
recognized symbol of Capri's Piazzetta, one of
the most unique free-standing clock towers in
Italy. It marks every quarter hour

During the later half of the 19th century, Capri
became a popular resort for European artists,
writers and other celebrities. The book that
spawned the 19th century fascination with Capri
in France, Germany, and England was Entdeckung
der blauen Grotte auf der Insel Capri (Discovery
of the Blue Grotto on the Isle of Capri) by
the German painter and writer August Kopisch, in
which he describes his 1826 stay on the island
and his (re)discovery of the Blue Grotto. The
isle of Capri is the setting for William Somerset
Maugham's The Lotus Eater, a short story in which
the Bostonian protagonist arrives in Capri on
holiday, wherein he is so enchanted by the place
that he abandons his job and decides to spend the
rest of his life in leisure on the island

38From April to the end of the summer, the island
comes to life from an artistic and cultural point
of view. Concerts are organized almost every
evening in the squares or the splendid villas
built by Tiberius, as well as painting and
sculpture exhibitions, plays and dance
performances. This wonderful island is a
destination that attracts visitors of all
nationalities
