3Sorrento, a lovely old town clinging to a
cliffside some thirty-nine kilometers southeast
of Naples. Tourism has a long history here. It
was a compulsory stop on the 19th-century 'Grand
Tour' and interest in the town was first sparked
by the poet Byron, who inspired a long line of
holidaying literary geniuses including Dickens,
Goethe and Tolstoy to sample the Sorrentine
air. The romance persists.

17Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria was founded by the
Fiorentino family in 1834 in Sorrento. And the
family's fifth generation is running the hotel
today. The hotel is located in Sorrento town
centre and sits on a high cliff with spectacular
views over the Gulf of Naples with Mount
Vesuvius. This is the same place where, the
legend goes, the Roman Emperor Augustus had his
own villa. Throughout the hotel and in the
beautiful gardens and courtyards pieces of
artwork are on display

41Hotel Tramontano
42The Imperial Hotel Tramontano, overlooking the
most beautiful part of the Gulf of Naples,
nourished the romantic culture of the
picturesque, sublime and landscapes of 19th
century travelers visiting Sorrento. It is now
legend that the hotel was visited by Milton
during one of his longer travel periods.
Tramontano guests also include Goethe, Byron,
Scott, Shelley, Lamartine, Musset, Keats,
Leopardi and Longfellow. James Fenimore Cooper
lived here until the completion of "Water Witch",
and it was here that Harriet Beecher Stowe found
her inspiration for "Agnes of Sorrento". During a
six-month stay here, Ibsen wrote his immortal
"Ghosts"..
43The world-famous song "Torna a Surriento" was
composed by G. B. de Curtis on the sea terrace of
the Hotel in 1902
