Understanding the OSSD Level A Comprehensive
Overview
2
Introduction
The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is
the high school diploma awarded to students who
successfully complete their secondary school
education in the province of Ontario, Canada. It
is a widely accepted credential that is required
for entry into post- secondary education and the
workforce.
3
What is OSSD Level?
The OSSD is a three-year program that begins in
Grade 9 and ends in Grade 12. To earn an OSSD,
students must complete a minimum of 30 credits,
including 18 compulsory credits and 12 elective
credits. The compulsory credits include courses
in English, mathematics, science, social
studies, the arts, and health and physical
education. The elective credits can be chosen
from a wide range of courses, such as foreign
languages, business, technology, and the arts.
4
In addition to completing the required credits,
students must also demonstrate their literacy
and numeracy skills by passing the Ontario
Literacy Test (OLT) and the Ontario Mathematics
Test (OMT). The OLT is a reading and writing
test, while the OMT is a basic math test. The
OSSD is divided into two levels Academic and
Applied. The Academic level is designed for
students who plan to pursue further education
after high school, such as college or
university. The Applied level is designed for
students who plan to enter the workforce after
high school.
5
Academic OSSD The Academic OSSD prepares students
for success in post-secondary education. It
focuses on developing students' critical
thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and
communication skills. Students in the Academic
OSSD typically take courses in English,
mathematics, science, social studies, and the
arts at a higher level than students in the
Applied OSSD.
6
Applied OSSD The Applied OSSD prepares students
for success in the workforce. It focuses on
developing students' practical skills and
knowledge. Students in the Applied OSSD typically
take courses in English, mathematics, science,
social studies, and the arts at a lower level
than students in the Academic OSSD. However,
they also take courses in speci?c trades or
occupations that will prepare them for the
workforce.
7
Conclusion
The OSSD is a valuable credential that can help
students to achieve their academic and career
goals. By understanding the OSSD requirements
and taking steps to succeed, students can
increase their chances of success in high school
and beyond.
