2What is a Black Eye?
- A black eye, also known as periorbital hematoma,
is characterized by bleeding beneath the skin
around the eye. - This discoloration occurs due to the accumulation
of blood from damaged blood vessels. - In some cases, a black eye might be indicative of
more severe injuries, such as skull fractures.
3Causes of Black Eye
- Black eyes are primarily caused by trauma or
injury to the area around the eye. - The trauma leads to blood vessels breaking and
blood collecting under the skin. - Common causes include direct impact, falls,
accidents, and sports-related injuries.
4- Black Eye Guidance on the severe cases
Identification of Severe Cases
- While black eyes are often minor injuries, they
can sometimes signal more extensive damage. - "Raccoon eyes," or bruising around both eyes, can
be a sign of significant trauma. - Black eyes following a head injury might be
indicative of underlying skull fractures.
5Other Causes of Back Eye
- A black eye can happen when something strikes a
person on the face. This could be a ball, a fist,
a door, or another item. - A black eye can also occur after some types of
dental or cosmetic surgery. The bruising can last
for several days. - A black eye itself is not dangerous, and the
discoloration is usually due to bruising around
the eye. Sometimes, however, it can be a sign of
a more serious condition. - Bruising around both eyes, known as raccoon
eyes, may indicate a skull fracture or other type
of head injury. This requires urgent medical
attention.
6- Black Eye - Action To Be Taken
To take care of a Black Eye
- Apply a cold pack, or a cloth full of ice, to
the affected area of the eye with gentle
pressure. Care should be taken not to press
directly on the eye. Apply cold immediately
post-injury to reduce swelling. Use ice or cool
packs for 24-48 hours. - Examine the white and colored areas of the eye
for blood. If blood is visible in any of these
areas, seek immediate medical attention from an
eye specialist (ophthalmologist). If you have
blurred vision, severe pain, or bleeding in your
eye or nose, seek medical attention immediately.
7- Black Eye - When To Seek The Doctor
When to Call a Doctor
- Call for emergency when
- Experiences changes in vision.
- Has severe pain or swelling that does not go
away. - Has swelling around the eyes that is not related
to an injury. - Has signs of infection (for example, fever,
warmth, redness, pus-like drainage). - Has behavioral changes, forgetfulness or
lethargy, or nausea, vomiting and/or dizziness.
