2IPBES Invasive Alien Species Assessment
- GS3 Ecology and Environment
3Invasive Alien Species
- An invasive species is one that is not indigenous
to a specific area - It has a negative impact on the environment,
economy, or human health. - Intentionally or unintentionally introduced into
a new area.
4Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and
Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
- Also known as the "IPCC for biodiversity/
- An independent intergovernmental body with over
140 member governments. - Established by governments in 2012
- Provides policymakers with objective scientific
assessments - Not a United Nations organisation.
- But, UNEP provides secretariat services to IPBES
5Assessment Report on Invasive Alien Species and
their Control
- 37000 alien species introduced by human
activities - 60 of global extinctions due to 3500 invasive
species - 6 of introduced plant species
- 22 of introduced invertebrates
- 14 of introduced vertebrates
- 11 of introduced microbes
are recognized as invasive.
6Major Invasive Species- Water Hyacinth
Water hyacinth is one of the most invasive plants
in the world, and it has been introduced to over
100 countries. Water hyacinth can grow rapidly,
forming dense mats that can cover waterways and
disrupt ecosystems. It can also block sunlight
and prevent native plants from growing.
7Major Invasive Species- Lantana Camara
- Lantana, a flowering shrub is the second most
common invasive species. Lantana can grow quickly
and form dense thickets that can outcompete
native plants. It can also produce toxic
chemicals that can harm animals and humans.
8Major Invasive Species
9Methods to control invasive species
- Physical removal involves removing the species
through tools or pesticides - Biological control uses natural predators
- Genetic control introduces sterile genes,
- Cultural control alters human interactions with
the environment to reduce invasive species'
habitation.
