ICT102 Technology and Networks
Assignment 2 Group Assignment Weightage 40
2
  • Aim
  • You are required to write a report that proposes
a network design for a Small to Medium
    enterprise/organization.
  • Learning Outcomes Assessed
  • The following course learning outcomes are
    assessed by completing this assignment
  • LO3.Recognize Network topologies, media types and
    network components
  • LO4. Identify the network OSI layers at which
    various network devices operate
  • LO5. Use some basic tools/utilities for network
    analysis.
  • Submission Details
  • This assignment carries 40 weightage and is to
be done in a group of 5 students. There are two
parts of this assignment which are given below
  • Part A Write a report based on the requirements
given in this document. The word limit of the
report is 2500. It should be written in size 12
Times New Roman Font. You must submit your own
work and use appropriate references in APA style
where needed. Do not copy and paste from the
internet or from your classmates. Write all the
answers in your own words. The similarity index
of your report should not be more than 20. The
report carries 25 marks and is marked out of
    100. The deadline to submit the report is by
    midnight 9 June 2023.
  • Part B All groups will give a presentation of 15
min (including a 3-5 minutes QA session) in the
webinar of week 12. Each student within the group
must present their part otherwise no marks will
be given. Zero marks will also be given if any
member of the group is absent on the presentation
    day. Presentation carries 15 marks.

  • chosen organization can be a bank, hospital,
school etc. You must discuss and take approval
of your chosen organization from the instructor.
  • You can search on the internet and find out more
details about the infrastructure (e.g servers,
users, devices, applications etc.) of your chosen
    organization.
  • You should clearly discuss the number of
departments, the number of users, the types of
    applications, workstations, servers, switch (es),
and router (s) in your organization.
  • You should clearly label and draw the logical
topology diagram of your organization in Packet
    Tracer.
  • 5. Assessment Details
  • Your report must have the following sections and
    each section should answer the
    questions/instructions given.
  • Executive summary
  • It should concisely explain the aims, objectives
    and content of the report.
  • It should be between 200 250 words long.
  • Introduction

4
  • severs, according to the department within the
    organisation e.g., HR_PC1, HR_Switch,
HR_WebServer etc. You need to show only two
workstations in each department. Change the name
of any switch to the name of any one group
    member.
  • For each of the departments, as explained above
in the Introduction section, describe the number
of workstations in each department. Each
department must have at least 10 workstations.
  • Justify and explain the use of a certain LAN
    topology for your organization.
  • How many switches will you need for your design?
    Explain your answer.
  • Which appropriate media will you use for your LAN
    and Why? Explain your answer.
  • Do you need Wireless connectivity in your
organization? Which technology will you use for
    this purpose? Explain your answer.
  • How many Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) will
you need for your LAN? What will be the
advantage (s) of these VLANs for your
    organization? Explain your answer
  • Mention exact make and model of the switches that
are required for your LAN. Hint search the
websites of leading networking vendors like
Cisco, Juniper etc. You must give citations in
APA format of the websites of these vendors.
  • Wide Area Network (WAN)
  • Draw the topology diagram of your WAN in Packet
Tracer. Change the name of your WAN device (s)
to the name of any group member.
  • Explain the WAN topology along with the device
    (s) needed for connecting the headquarter and
    branch offices.
  • Describe appropriate media type for connectivity
    of WAN Link (s).
  • What will be the advantage of Network Address
Translator (NAT) for your organization? Where
will you implement NAT in your organization?
    Explain your answer.
  • Which routing protocol do you need for your
organization? Justify your answer by providing a
    comparison between different routing protocols.
  • What will be the advantage of using a multi-layer
switch for your organization? Explain your
    answer.
  • Mention the exact make and model of the device
    (s) that are required for your WAN. Hint search
the websites of leading networking vendors like
Cisco, Juniper. You must give citations in APA
format of the websites of these vendors.

5
  • Network Configuration in Packet Tracer
  • You need to implement some part of your
architecture in the Packet Tracer as given
    below
  • Change the hostname of any switch in your
topology diagram to the name of any group member
and put a screenshot in your report.
  • Assign IP addresses to workstations, servers, and
router interfaces. Use the private IP address
pool e.g., utilise the 10.XX.10.0 IP address with
255.255.255.0 subnet mask. The XX in the IP
address shows the last two digits of Student ID
    of group members.
  • Use the IP address of 30.30.30.1 and 30.30.30.2
with 255.255.255.0 subnet mask for the link
between the gateway router of your organization
and the ISP router. Change the hostname of the
gateway router to the name of any group member
and put a screenshot of the running
configuration of the router showing IP address
configuration on all interfaces Hint Use Show
    running-configuration command.
  • You have to put screenshots of the following in
    you report
  • PING any workstation from another workstation
    within a specific department
  • PING default gateway router from any workstation
    within a specific department
  • Note No configuration is needed other than that
    mentioned above.
  • Conclusions
  • Conclude your work and explain the lessons
    learned.
