MULTIMEDIA AND ITS UTILITY
DOON BUSINESS SCHOOL GROUP
2
OBJECTIVES
  • AFTER GOING THROUGH THIS SLIDESHOW, YOU WILL BE
    ABLE TO
  • Define the basic concept of multimedia
  • Appreciate multimedia as a new chapter in
    information technology
  • Identify and describe various components of
multimedia like, sound, animation and graphics
  • Discuss various hardware requirement for
    multimedia and
  • Describe how images and sound works in
    multimedia.

3
WHAT IS MULTIMEDIA
  • The word multi and media are combined to form the
word multimedia. The word multi signifies
    many.
  • Media is the presentation of text, pictures,
audio, and video with links and tools that allow
the user to navigate, engage, create, and
    communicate using a computer.
  • Multimedia refers to the computer-assisted
integration of text, drawings, still and moving
    images(videos) graphics, audio, animation, and
any other media in which any type of information
can be expressed, stored, communicated, and
    processed digitally.

4
TYPES OF MULTIMEDIA
  • The difference is in the interactivity because if
the user can control the contents access and
order then it is a non-linear structure.
  • Multimedia presentations can be live or recorded.
The difference that can be noticed is live
    multimedia presentation may allow interactivity
via interaction with the presenter or performer
while a recorded presentation may allow
    interactivity via a navigation system.
  • LINEAR
  • Linear active content progresses often without
any navigational control for the viewer such as a
cinema presentation. It is the information
presented in a sequence of events in a specific
order in a straight pathway,. Behaviourist or
traditional teachers prefer this method of
    presenting information. E.g Movie.
  • NON-LINEAR
  • Non-linear uses interactivity to control progress
as with a video game or self-paced computer based
    training. E.g Hypermedia.

5
COMPONENT OF MULTIMEDIA
  • Following are the common components of
    multimedia
  • Text
  • Graphics
  • Audio
  • Video
  • Animation

6
TEXT
  • As a multimedia option, text can easily be
overlooked, but it is still the most fundamental
element and most effective way to communicate in
    multimedia.
  • Text is used as headlines, subtitles, and
slogans. Its purpose is to express specific
information or reinforce information in other
    media.
  • It involves the use of text types, sizes, colours
    and background colour.
  • For example, you can choose the font and its
size and colour to set a tone or project an
image, or you can choose the mood you want to
    evoke with background colour.
  • Text options in multimedia are limitless!

7
GRAPHICS
  • Graphics are an important part of multimedia
because humans are visually oriented. Images
    including photographs, illustrations, drawings,
clip art, icons or any other non-text elements on
a website or in social media are an example of
    graphics.
  • There is no movement in these types of pictures.
Still/static pictures typically accompany text to
illustrate the point or ideas the text makes.
Photos in a multimedia application go beyond
    using them just as decoration.
  • In a multimedia context graphics may consist of
slide shows or galleries that a website or social
    media visitor can view.

8
ANIMATED
  • Animated elements are common multimedia
applications. Animation is a series of images put
together to give the effect of movement. In
multimedia, 2D and 3D digital animation is used.
  • Movement, rather than just viewing a still image,
is especially useful for illustrating concepts
    that involve movement.
  • Animation is used to add visual interest or bring
attention to important information or links. It
can illustrate how things work or present
    information in entertaining ways.
  • Animation can also include interactive effects
allowing visitors to engage with the animation
action using their mouse and keyboard. Animation
is a dynamic and media-rich content that stays
within one container on a page a very powerful
    form of communication.

9
SOUND
  • Sound can enhance your website design and social
media platforms. It is a multimedia application
that uses dialogue, recorded narration, music and
sound effects. These are called the audio or
    sound elements.
  • When used in moderation, adding multimedia such
as sound to your presentation can be a great way
to catch and focus the visitors attention, to
deliver information to visitors, and to help
reinforce the visitors comprehension of the
    information presented.
  • For example, narration can be used to describe
what is being seen in an animation clip enhancing
the understanding of what the clip is all about.

10
VIDEO
  • Video is a visual multimedia application that
combines a sequence of images to form moving
    pictures and sound.
  • Video can have an impact on websites and on
social media platforms in a very unique and
    powerful way.
  • You can inform the world that your company
exists, spread the word about your company, grab
attention to show your visitors how to do
something, showcase a new product, build brand
awareness, or even promote an upcoming event.
  • You name it, you can do it with video!

11
THE USES OF MULTIMEDIA
  • Multimedia is a computer based synchronized
system that includes text, audio, video,
    animation, graphics, interactive computing etc.
Its an amazing invention of modern communication
technology. It enhances the utility of computer
to the general people by enriching business,
education, entertainment, medicare etc. The uses
or importance of multimedia in different fields
    are discussed in the following
  • Education
  • Entertainment
  • Marketing.
  • Communication
  • Helps in research

12
EDUCATION
  • Multimedia has brought revolutionary changes in
the field of education. It has made the system of
education more attractive and effective than any
    other periods in the past.
  • Now a day, multimedia presents the contents of
education such as information, still and moving
pictures, sounds pronunciations of words etc.,
clearly and attractively to the students. It is
now possible to earn knowledge even staying at
    home through various multimedia softwares.

13
ENTERTAINMENT
  • Invention of multimedia has opened a new horizon
in the field of entertainment. Now a day, the
various media of entertainment such as radio,
television, VCR, VCD, record player etc., can be
    enjoyed through multimedia program.
  • Besides this, playing games and drawing pictures
in computer, online chatting etc. are the
    contribution of multimedia

14
MARKETING
  • In order to increase sales, large companies
develop CD Rom software with different
information like prices, uses, terms of sales etc
of their products and services and distribute
    them to the probable customers.
  • Therefore, the buyers can buy their required
products by knowing the prices, terms of sale
etc. from the CD even staying at home or office.

15
HELPS IN RESEARCH
  • Researchers require different kinds of
information to conduct their research and
development works. Internet plays a vital role in
    obtaining the necessary information.
  • By searching the Internet the researchers can
gather their required information and make
    successful research.

16
COMMUNICATION
  • Multimedia communication presents information in
an interesting, creative way that helps many
different types of learners internalize the data.
Infographics are a common example of multimedia
    communication.
  • These large images are set up like posters and
have text, statistics, graphs, charts and images
that provide information. Visual learners who
need these graphs, charts and images are able to
get just as much from the infographic as learners
who focus on numbers who, for instance, hone in
    on the statistics.

17
CONCLUSION
  • In the field of education, multimedia is being
used extensively especially for online courses
and training. Creative and technical skills are
required for the integration of two or more
media. The most challenging problem is content
    based retrieval

Apart from education, it is widely used in
entertainment, journalism, engineering, various
industries, etc. In daily life, we use it at home
for games and other modes of entertainment,
offices for presentations and training, etc.
Since there are disabilities related to
multimedia, various solutions are being offered
to those who are impaired.
Multimedia plays a great role in social
development. Even the people with cognitive
disabilities can socialize by improving their
interactive skills through computer based
programs. Moreover, it is becoming the biggest
big data as the most valuable source for insights
and information. Everything will be based on
media in the future world.
