Title: Knee Aspiration: Reducing Swelling and Improving Mobility
1Knee Aspiration Reducing Swelling and Improving
Mobility
2Knee aspiration, also known as knee joint
aspiration, is a medical procedure that involves
removing a small amount of synovial fluid from
the knee joint using a needle and syringe. The
synovial fluid is the lubricating fluid that
surrounds and cushions the knee joint, and it can
be analyzed to diagnose various knee conditions,
such as infection, inflammation, and
arthritis. During the procedure, the knee is
cleaned and sterilized, and a local anesthetic
may be used to numb the area around the knee. A
needle is then inserted into the joint space, and
the synovial fluid is aspirated into a syringe.
The amount of fluid removed may vary depending on
the condition being diagnosed, but usually,
between 1-3 milliliters are collected.
3After the procedure, the knee may be bandaged and
elevated, and the patient may be advised to rest
the knee for a few hours. The collected synovial
fluid is sent to a laboratory for analysis, and
the results are usually available within a few
days. Depending on the diagnosis, further
treatment, such as antibiotics or
anti-inflammatory medications, may be recommended.
