Introduction
  • José Andrés was born in Spain in 1969. When he
    was 15, he went to culinary school. He shift in
    the United States in 1991. His success with the
    restaurant Jaleo sparked interest in Spanish food
    in the Washington, D.C. area and led to the rise
    of the Think Food Group, a chain of more than two
    dozen restaurants.

World Central Kitchen
  • In 2010, Andrés started a charity called World
    Central Kitchen to help people who have been
    affected by disasters get food. He has also been
    on TV shows like Made in Spain, written a
    number of cookbooks, and won awards like the
    National Humanities Medal.

Early Life
  • Growing up and starting to like Cooking José
    Ramon Andres Puerta was born on 1969, in Spain.
    When he was five year old, his family moved to
    the outskirts of Barcelona. Andréss parents were
    both nurses, so he often helped them in the
    kitchen. His mom, Marisa, made simple but tasty
    meals on a tight budget, and his dad, Mariano,
    made huge batches of paella on the weekends for
    friends and family.

Kitchen Lesson
  • Andrés has told the story many times about how he
    eagerly waited to help mix the paella, but was
    told to take care of the fire instead. When he
    lost it one day, his dad took him aside to teach
    him a lesson that would help him in the kitchen
    and elsewhere if you learn to control the fire,
    you can cook anything you want.

Job Career
  • At age 15, the aspiring chef went to Barcelonas
    Escola de Restauració I Hostalatge. Then, he
    joined the Spanish navy and saw the United States
    and the Caribbean for the first time. Andrés then
    went back to work in the kitchen of Ferran
    Adriàs famous El Bulli restaurant in Rosas,
    Spain. He worked there until a misunderstanding
    with his boss in late 1990 put him out of work.

As a Cook Job
  • With only 50 in his pocket, Andrés moved to New
    York City and got as a cook job at the Eldorado
    Petit in Manhattan.
  • Andrés moved to Washington, D.C., in 1993, to run
    the kitchen at Jaleo, a new Spanish restaurant.
    He soon made the restaurant one of the best
    places to eat.

Business
  • As Andrés grew his business in the D.C. area, he
    had more success. In 1995, he took over the Nuevo
    Latino menu at Café Atlántico and then opened the
    Mediterranean restaurant Zaytinya and the Mexican
    restaurant Oyamel. At the same time, he opened
    the well-known tasting counter minibar by José
    Andrés, which went on to get two Michelin stars.

Think Food Group
  • In 2006, Andrés and his business partner Rob
    Wilder put all of their businesses under one
    umbrella called Think Food Group. By the end of
    2021, Think Food Group was in charge of 30 places
    around the world, such as é by José Andrés in Las
    Vegas and the Mercado Little Spain market in New
    York City.

The World Kitchen
  • Even though Andrés was already very busy with his
    many restaurants, he found a new way to help
    people after the terrible earthquake that hit
    Haiti in 2010. He then started World Central
    Kitchen, a charity that helps people get food
    after natural disasters and other emergencies.

Getting Local Cooks and Volunteers
  • It was clear how important World Central Kitchen
    was. Within a few days of the disaster, Andrés
    and his team got to the island and started
    getting local cooks and volunteers together. By
    November, WCK had made and sent out about 4
    million meals all over the country.

Reason to Close his Business
  • When the COVID-19 pandemic started closing
    businesses in 2020, WCK jumped into action. One
    thing they did was turn Mercado Little Spain and
    the Washington Nationals baseball stadium into
    community kitchens and food distribution centers.
    After Russia invaded Ukraine at the beginning of
    2022, World Central Kitchen set up a camp on the
    border with Poland to feed people who had to
    leave their homes.
  • The nonprofit started its Climate Disaster Fund
    in 2021, with the goal of raising 1 billion over
    ten years to help fix problems caused by extreme
    weather.

Books and TV shows
  • After the success of his Spanish-language show
    Vamos a Cocinar and appearances on American
    shows like Iron Chef, Andrés got his own TV
    show Made in Spain in the U.S.  Made in Spain
    is a travel and cooking show where Andrés goes
    all over his home country, Spain, to find and eat
    the best foods from each area.

Books
  • Made in Spain came with a cookbook. This is the
    latest book by the author, who has also written
    Tapas A Sample of Spain in America (2005) and
    Vegetables Released (2019), as well as his diary
    We Took care of An Island The Genuine Story of
    Reconstructing Puerto Rico, Each Supper In turn
    (2018).

Starting a Company
  • In October 2021, the famous chef announced that
    he was starting a company called José Andrés
    Media. This company would be in charge of making
    properties for print media, TV, podcasts, and
    digital content.

Prizes and Awards
  • Andrés has won many awards. In 2011, the James
    Beard Foundation named him its top chef, and in
    2018, it named him its humanitarian of the year.
    In 2010, he was the first chef to get Spains
    Order of Arts and Letters medal. In 2016,
    President Barack Obama gave him the National
    Humanities Medal, and in 2019, he was nominated
    for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Wife and Kids
  • Patricia Fernandez de la Cruz, who is married to
    Andrés, is also from Spain, but she and Andres
    met when they were both living in Washington,
    D.C. They got married in September 1995 and have
    three daughters Carlota, Ines, and Lucia.

Undocumented Immigrants
  • Andrés has written opinion pieces about ways for
    undocumented immigrants to become citizens
    because he has strong opinions about immigration.
    In 2013, both Andrés and Patricia became citizens
    of the United States.
  • When Andrés isnt travelling the world, he lives
    in Bethesda, Maryland, with his family. Aside
    from food, he likes to go scuba diving and kite
    surfing.
