Parents and Language Development in Children

• The acquisition of language is one of the great
  achievements of the child who goes from emitting
  incomprehensible sounds to having a perfectly
  developed language, without any established
  method but as a natural process. In this
  development , parents are the models and teachers
  who teach children to speak, especially during
  the first years of life when they are like
  sponges.

How to stimulate my child to start talking?

• In the stimulation of speech, the role of the
  mother is essential , since she constantly speaks
  to the child from birth. When you are with him,
  when you change his diaper, at mealtime, in the
  bathroom, on a walk... With this, the child will
  learn little by little without realizing it,
  since his mother will repeatedly name things by
  his name, he will imitate his sounds and that
  will stimulate the baby. In addition, if we
  accompany many of the words with gestures , this
  will help the child to memorize better.
• For this reason, the type of language, the tone
  and the attitude of the parents when they address
  their child is important.

Children usually begin to speak between 15 and 18
months, but there are no fixed rules, since many
factors influence development and parents have to
be patient.

• It must be taken into account that the child
  begins by understanding the words but cannot
  speak and will do so when he is ready. It is not
  good to pressure him or for the parents to fall
  into situations of impatience or demand. We must
  continue to speak to him in a natural way and
  with an appropriate language. You have to take
  the time to listen to him while he babbles,
  repeat his sounds to encourage him to continue
  doing it or lovingly correct the wrong words.
• The richer the conversations with babies, with
  children and between parents, the greater the
  stimulus in learning to speak.

What to do before the first words of your child?

• When the child utters his first words, and he
  does it incorrectly, it is not convenient to
  perpetuate those words because they are so funny
  . We must repeat them correctly again without the
  child feeling judged. With this, he will
  gradually learn to pronounce them better.
• As parents , we should not stop talking to our
  children, explaining things to them from an early
  age, whether they do not speak or start to speak
  or when they are already having conversations
  with adults. This attitude, later on, when they
  are older, will be very beneficial for them. It
  is also convenient that when he already speaks we
  start asking them many questions. With this, we
  will get him used to explaining himself and
  stimulate his short and long-term memory. The
  game can also become our ally with language.
• And it is that the ultimate goal is that our
  children communicate correctly and that others
  understand them in order to communicate well with
  them.

How to improve your vocabulary and language?

• When children are already beginning to evolve in
  their language, the role of parents remains
  paramount. Therefore, as our child grows, parents
  must also learn to listen patiently because their
  language is evolving and it may take longer than
  usual to form sentences. However, given these
  facts, one should not be tempted to finish the
  words or sentences for them, since we can slow
  down the expressive capacity of the child.
• We must be present for their doubts or for long
  conversations and gradually teach them other
  skills. For example, they cannot interrupt the
  parents' conversations, but at the same time it
  is important that they feel heard.

Tips to help your child in language acquisition

• There is no need to pressure them to pronounce
  perfectly. They will do it according to their
  possibilities and progressively.When the child
  is young, imitate the child's sounds such as
  tata, brr... It is good for him to listen to it
  and feel stimulated to repeat it and imitate
  it.It is also good to accompany the sound with
  gestures. If something falls off poof, if they
  see a cat meow, if something smells bad
  poof...It is important to give him time and
  attention, encourage him to make sounds and
  words.It is necessary to repeat the sounds or
  words that the child has made incorrectly in a
  soft voice but correctly. With this, we encourage
  you to repeat it correctly.As he grows up, it is
  not good to continue imitating him but he will be
  the one to imitate you, while listening to how
  you express yourself.Parents are an example for
  the child to be correct but we should not
  constantly correct him.The failures will
  disappear on their own by continuing to listen to
  the parents speak correctly.

• You have to correct him without making him feel
  bad , without yelling and without embarrassing
  him, always respecting his rhythmWhen he misses
  a word, smile approvingly and repeat it correctly
  to him.We should not encourage him to continue
  using the wrong words because we find them
  funny.Parents must provide the necessary
  conditions so that their language improves little
  by little, through encouragement from an early
  age.Don't get impatient if he mispronounces,
  stutters or hesitates , especially between the
  ages of two and four.Don't pressure him. He must
  feel accepted, that will give him confidence.Be
  understanding and support him.
