What is a PDO thread?
A thread lift is a procedure that uses a
dissolvable suture to tighten and lift your skin.
Its a less invasive procedure than facelift
surgery and can often be performed in under 45
minutes without needing to go under a scalpel,
making it a very popular treatment in the
aesthetics doctors office. Polydioxanone (PDO)
thread lifts use a biodegradable polyester
suture. Theyre best suited for rejuvenating your
skin (MONO threads) while some newer types of
thread lifts are better at lifting sagging skin
(COG or BARBED threads). Lets take a look at
what makes a PDO thread lift different from other
thread lifts and what you can expect during the
procedure.

What makes PDO threads different?
PDO threads are one of three types of
sutures commonly used in thread lift procedures.
The other two types are made from polylactic acid
(PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCA). PDO threads
have been around the longest of the three and
have been used in surgeries since the 1980s.
Theyre made from a colorless polyester that
breaks down in your body after about 6
months. The presence of these sutures in your
skin triggers cells in your body called
fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Collagen is
the protein that gives your skin its structure
and elasticity. Loss of collagen is one of the
main causes of aging skin.

PDO threads can be further divided into three
categories
PDO mono threads.
These are smooth sutures that help rejuvenate
your skin by stimulating collagen production and
improving the architecture of the skin.
PDO cog threads.
These threads have barbs that latch into your
skin like small fishhooks, to provide support and
lift parts of your face.
PDO screw threads.
Made up of one or two intertwined threads, these
are used to help restore volume to sunken parts
of your skin.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?
PDO threads are versatile, they can treat
virtually any area of the face. The commonest
areas treated are
  • Crows feet
  • Undereye area
  • Eyebrows
  • Cheeks
  • Marionette lines
  • Under the chin (double chin)
  • Neck
  • Jowls
  • Jaw line
  • Nasolabial folds

Cog threads can be used to perform a non-surgical
face lift. The results last around 2 years.

Consultation Treatment
How long the PDO threads last depends on a number
of factors, including the thickness of the
threads, the quality of the threads and your
bodys rate of metabolism. However, most of our
clients find that the beneficial and rejuvenating
effects of the treatment last around 18 months
2 years, even though the suture material will
have dissolved in half of that time.
Aftercare
The aftercare for this treatment is minimal. We
advise to avoiding makeup or strenuous exercise
for the first 48 hours after treatment and to
avoid washing the treated area for 12 hours
immediately after your treatment.
PDO thread lifting treatment is very effective in
the hands of experienced facial aesthetics
doctors and tend to result in minimal side
effects, other than mild swelling and bruising
which is common with all facial aesthetics
treatments.
