2All about the TAVI procedure
Implantation of a Transcatheter Aortic Valve
(TAVI) It's a procedure for repairing an aortic
valve that's been damaged. You will have an
artificial heart valve made of natural animal
heart tissue installed during a TAVI operation.
What's the point of getting a TAVI?
If you have a problem with your aortic valve and
are at high risk for open-heart surgery, your
doctor may consider a TAVI operation. One of the
heart's four primary valves is the aortic valve,
also known as the tricuspid valve. Blood flows
from your heart to the rest of your body in one
way while your heart beats.
What is the procedure for a TAVI?
- A general or local anesthetic will be
administered before your TAVI operation, which
will take 1-2 hours on average.
- A catheter (a hollow tube with a balloon at its
tip) is placed into an artery in either the groin
or under the collarbone.
- Once the catheter is in place in your heart, the
aortic valve is closed, and the procedure is
complete.
3- The balloon is gently inflated and deflated to
make room for the new tissue valve.
- Depending on the type of valve utilized, the
replacement valve will either self-expand or
employ a balloon.
- Before the balloon and catheter are removed, the
balloon is deflated.
- Your broken valve has been replaced with a new
valve.
4- In this method, you can introduce a catheter with
a balloon on the tip directly into the left
bottom chamber of your heart (the left ventricle)
and across the constricted valve. Transapical
approaches, as they are known, are rare.
What are the pros and cons of using a TAVI?
- If you have other health conditions and are
weaker, you may be offered a TAVI instead of
open-heart surgery. Before the procedure, your
cardiologist should review your risks and
advantages.
- For people with shortness of breath and chest
pain, a TAVI surgery can help alleviate these
symptoms and minimize the risk for heart failure
and mortality.
- Similar to valve replacement, TAVI may result in
problems (worn-out valve, blood clots, irregular
heart rhythm). TAVI patients are more likely to
suffer a stroke.
- Endocarditis can strike anyone with a compromised
heart valve or surgery. You're in danger if
you've ever had endocarditis. An infection of the
heart's inner lining, known as endocarditis, is
rare. The cardiac valves are the most general
area where this occurs.
