2In Vitro Fertilisation
In vitro fertilisation or IVF is a series of
fertility treatment procedures to help
infertile couples conceive and give birth to a
healthy and cute baby. In IVF treatment,
experts stimulate a female s ovaries for egg
production, retrieve eggs, fertilise the egg with
the extracted sperm from a male s semen and
transfer embryo into the female s uterus.
3The IVF process lasts for around three weeks. In
some cases, it can last for more than four
weeks. The process take more time when a female
faces a miscarriage. In vitro fertilisation is
an effective form of ART ( assisted reproductive
technology). Doctors carry out it with the use
of a couple s eggs and sperm. Or they suggest
opting for an egg or sperm donor program if they
find that the egg/ sperm of a couple is not
healthy for conception.
4Why is there a need for IVF treatment?
IVF is an effective treatment to cure fertility
problems and enable a couple to produce a child.
It is a less invasive, but long
treatment procedure. Experts recommend
IVF treatment to a childless couple if they have
5Blocked or damage fallopian tubes Ovulation
disorders Uterine fibroids Endometriosis Previous
removal or sterilisation of the fallopian
tubes Poor sperm production, count, motility or
shape Genetic disorder Unexplained infertility
Fertility preservation
6IVF treatment process
As a couple consults a respective doctor, the
expert interacts closely with both the husband
and the wife. During the interaction, the
expert tries to know fertility issues, family
background, and lifestyle. After going through a
few test or screening results, the expert
explains the IVF treatment process and advises
the couple to be ready for the same. The process
includes
7Ovary stimulation with injectable hormonal
drugs Egg retrieval Sperm extraction Egg
fertilisation/ embryo development Embryo
transfer Pregnancy test after 2 - 3 weeks of
embryo transfer
