  • One of the most commonly used plays in youth
basketball offenses is the ball screen.
  • Unfortunately, this offensive strategy can be
hard to defend. Still, suppose you coached your
defense correctly and prepared your players? In
that case, you can defend the ball screen
effectively and get back into an excellent
    defensive position.
  • Below, we'll go over some tips on defending ball
    screens in youth basketball.

1. Keep an Eye on Both Players
  • When coaching basketball shooting, ball screens
are a coach's favorite way to break down
    opponents.
  • A ball screen is set when an offensive player
sets a screen for a teammate who has possession
of the ball. If you're in charge of guarding
someone who comes off a ball screen, you must
stay between your opponent and your teammate with
possession of the ball. While it may be tempting
to focus on just one player during a ball screen,
you need to watch both players when you're
    playing defense.

2. Know Where the Screen Is Going
  • A shooting machine is an effective tool for
teaching players about ball screens and how to
    defend them.
  • The most important thing is for your players to
know where the screen is going. They need an
    instinctive reaction that directs them
immediately towards wherever a defender has
scouted as the location of the ball screenas
soon as they see it coming.

3. Know What You Want to Happen
  • A great way to practice defending ball screens is
    with a basketball machine.
  • It allows you to set up defensive drills without
having any other players on offense so that you
can work on all kinds of different situations.
You can set it up to fire screens from different
angles, directions, and distances. You can also
adjust it to fire them with varying degrees of
    speed and intensity.

4. Force a Bad Shot
  • If you can make the player come off of a screen,
    then that's great.
  • But what about forcing him to take his time and
make a lousy shot? Training with a basketball
return system will help the defenders know what a
good or bad shot is, thus helping them point the
offensive player towards a horrid shot.
  • It's also crucial for defenders to communicate so
they don't both end up helping on one side of the
    floor or rotating late.
