Intro
  • A search engine is a software program that helps
    people find the information they are looking for
    online using keywords or phrases. It looks for
    the results in its own database, sorts them and
    makes an ordered list of these results using
    unique search algorithms. This list is called a
    search engine results page (SERP).Search engines
    are able to return results quickly.It enables
    users to locate information on the World Wide
    Web. Popular examples of search engines are
    Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Search.

  • An index is another name for the database used by
    a search engine.It contain the information on all
    the websites that Google (or any other search
    engine) was able to find. If a website is not in
    a search engine's index, users will not be able
    to find it.

  • Indexing is the process by which search engines
    organise information before a search to enable
    super-fast responses to queries.
  • It is the process of adding web pages into
    Google search.

  • Crawling is the process by which search engines
    discover updated content on the web, such as new
    sites or pages, changes to existing sites.
  • It is a process which is done by search engine
    bots to discover publicly available web pages.

  • Search engines work through three primary
    functions
  • Crawling Scour the Internet for content, looking
    over the code/content for each URL they find.
  • Indexing Store and organize the content found
    during the crawling process. Once a page is in
    the index, its in the running to be displayed as
    a result to relevant queries.
  • Ranking Provide the pieces of content that will
    best answer a searcher's query, which means that
    results are ordered by most relevant to least
    relevant.
