Title: Mental Health and Addiction Services Calgary
1Mental Health Issues And Addiction
2There are a few mental health disorders that
frequently co-occur with addiction. These
disorders are often the root cause of
addiction. That is why, when it comes to a
person's long-term addiction recovery plan, it
is critical never to overlook the symptoms of a
mental health condition or behavioural disorder.
3The most common mental health
disorders associated with substance abuse are
mentioned below
- Bipolar Disorder -
- Addiction affects roughly half of all people with
bipolar disorder. It is tempting, as with any
other condition, to self-medicate. For people
with bipolar disorder, drugs and alcohol provide
temporary relief from emotional situations and
manic episodes.
4Borderline personality disorder According to
research, addiction and borderline personality
disorder (BPD) frequently co-occur. More than
two-thirds of people with borderline personality
disorder have abused alcohol or used drugs at
some point in their lives. Depression Depression
affects one out of every ten adults in Canada.
Many people diagnosed with depression attempt to
self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Which
frequently exacerbates the problem. Eating
disorders Feelings of inferiority frequently
cause eating disorders. People with eating
disorders are more likely to use
appetite-suppressing drugs.
5Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Generalized
anxiety disorder (GAD), the most common mental
health condition in the United States, affects
18 of the adult population. People suffering
from GAD may be more likely to abuse drugs and
alcohol to alleviate their symptoms.
Benzodiazepines, which are highly addictive
prescription medications used to treat anxiety
disorders, may also be abused. Obsessive-compulsi
ve disorder (OCD) Obsessive-compulsive disorder
(OCD) causes a variety of unwanted obsessions
and compulsions, including an irrational fear of
germs and the need to clean constantly. As a
result of their involuntary behaviour, people
with OCD frequently suffer from anxiety and
depression, leading to substance abuse.
6Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) When a
person suffers from (PTSD), their brain produces
fewer endorphins than a healthy brain, making
the afflicted person more likely to seek
happiness through drugs or alcohol. As per the US
Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly 75 of
soldiers and veterans who have experienced a
traumatic or violent event while serving in the
military report a pattern of alcohol
abuse. Schizophrenia Delusional thinking and
Hallucinations are cornerstones of schizophrenia.
Diagnosis of schizophrenia in the presence of
addiction can be difficult due to the
overlapping effects of the two conditions. When
a person with schizophrenia uses substances to
self-medicate their situation, they risk
endangering their health even further.
7Seek Treatment for a Dual Diagnosis People with
co-occurring conditions frequently arrive at
Smart Clinic in varying states of distress and
poor general health. While some people develop an
alcohol or drug addiction before being diagnosed
with a mental health disorder, others become
addicted afterward. Regardless of which occurred
first, it is critical to find a tailored
treatment plan that targets both conditions
concurrently rather than a program that treats
them separately. The structured and safe
environment at Smart Clinic can be highly
beneficial in the case of a dual diagnosis.
Coming to Smart Clinic for a co-occurring
disorder is ideal because patients receive close
attention and care.
