INTRODUCTION
  • When transporting your goods overseas, it makes
sense to choose a cost-effective and safe option
whilst keeping costs down throughout your supply
chain. Full Container Load (FCL) shipping is a
useful option in many cases, especially when you
need to deliver a large volume of product.
  • Ship at high volumes? Ship large items like
furniture, fragile ones like ceramics, or large,
    fragile ones like flat-screen TVs?
  • You are very likely an FCL shipper.
  • But that doesnt mean everything about FCL is
    clear.
  • Thats why we consulted the experts and put
together this guide to FCL. Read on to learn
everything you need to know about shipping full
    containers.

4
FCL SHIPPING
FCL involves shipping goods using, literally, a
full container. The container is used
exclusively for a full single shipment. You wont
share the container with any other cargo the
whole thing will be yours. However, this also
means you bear the cost of the complete shipment.
5
WHAT DOES FCL STANDS FOR?
  • FCL stands for a full container load.

6
WHY USE FCL SHIPPING?
  • Cost Shipping large volumes of product in an FCL
is generally cheaper than LCL. This is because
LCL shipping levies charges on a cubic meter
basis whereas FCL rates are typically flat rates
charged per the container. Whilst LCL works for
small volume (anything under 10CBM), you normally
benefit from cost efficiencies in an FCL over
    this amount.
  • Less risk of damage Because you will have one
container full of your own goods with FCL, you
can ensure that the integrity of your product is
maintained because your goods will not be mixed
    with other cargo.
  • More efficient Using FCL through buyers
consolidation is an effective way of shipping
multiple smaller consignments from the same
location. Rather than shipping multiple LCL
shipments, it can be more efficient to
consolidate the cargo together into one larger
    FCL shipment.

7
HOW DOES FCL SHIPPING WORK?
  • Booking your shipment The first stage is to book
your FCL shipment. Your freight forwarder is able
to do this for you, although youll need to
ensure you give all the right documentation to
them to ensure your order is managed with ease.
  • Prepare goods for shipping The next step will be
to prepare your goods for shipping. This can take
time depending on the nature of the goods. We
recommend starting early and seeking advice as to
whether your goods require special packaging.
  • Drayage After your goods are packed into the
container and are ready to go, the FCL will be
drayed out towards the port where your goods
    will be exported.
  • Transit Once at the port, the FCL will transit
to its destination on the appropriate vessel.
  • Pickup or delivery Once your goods arrive at the
port and offloaded from the vessel, theyll
usually be delivered directly to the final
    destination point.

8
WHEN IS FCL THE BEST OPTION?
  • When goods fill a container Youll most likely
use FCL for larger loads that can fit into their
    own container.
  • Goods are large FCL rates are charged per
container or per twenty foot equivalent unit
(TEU), so youll probably want to ship cargo
using an FCL method if your shipment is over 15
cubic meters. Even when goods are small, the
option of buyers consolidation may still be
available. It will depend on your own commercial
circumstances. FCL is a cost saver if you have a
whole range of smaller shipments that could be
    sent at once.
  • Regular shipments If you are shipping goods
regularly, FCL is the most cost-effective way to
    transport cargo.

9
FCL SHIPMENTS CHARGES
  • When working with FCL, the buyer is renting the
whole container space at a fixed rate. Aside from
the fixed ocean freight cost, the buyer also
needs to consider some additional fixed costs,
such as the handling charges and chassis fee.
  • Shipping lines usually change rates based on the
routes demand, similar to commercial air travel,
so its best to check the rates depending on when
and where the container is going to be shipped.
  • Here are some other factors that affect FCL
    pricing
  • GRIs (General Rate Increases).
  • Peak season price spikes.
  • Holiday delays.

10
ADDITIONAL FCL COST AND FEES
Labeling and palletization
Port Congestion Surcharge
Delivery
Additional FCL Cost Fees.
Demurrage and Detention
Customs Bonds
Duties and Taxes

ADVANTAGES OF SHIPPING FCL
  • The FCL Agreement is common for large-volume
shipments because of the following reasons
  • Risk With all types of shipping, risks are
inevitable. While FCL does have the benefit of
having significantly lower overall risks, we have
outlined the potential dangers below for shippers
    to be aware of.
  • Cost FCL can still be cheaper than LCL, even
when the containers are not filled to their full
capacity. When a shipment has a total volume
greater than 14 CBM, FCL becomes a viable option.
  • Time The total transit time is also an advantage
for the FCL agreement when compared with LCL
because the whole container is transported
    directly to the final destination.

PROS AND CONS OF FCL SHIPMENTS
  • FCL Shipments Pros
  • Flexibility FCL eliminates the need to find
suppliers with transportation needs on the same
routes as you, making the operation entirely
    customized to your individual demand.
  • Safety FCL is likely to not damage your goods as
the container just contains your goods
  • Agility FCL normally guarantees a faster
delivery when compared to LCL, considering
customs and inspections processes are more
straightforward when all the goods in a container
    belonging to a single supplier.
  • FCL Shipments Cons
  • High costs FCL requires you to pay for and
accommodate the full container usage. This often
    makes the operation more expensive.
  • Unfit for small parcels FCL doesnt attend the
needs of importers and exporters with smaller
    cargo volume.

14
EXPERT TIPS FOR GETTING THE BEST FCL PRICING

    origin port with your seller.
  • Book at least two weeks in advance of your pickup
    date. Three if possible.
  • Know your shipments precise weight.
  • Get important delivery information from your
