Technique for Using A Die to Make Threads
2
Although dies and taps work together as a set of
threading tools, both works differently. Dies
and taps are the tools for the threading
process. However, both look different. On one
side, the threading taps make inside threads and
have teeth on the outer side. On the other hand,
the dies create threads on the outer side and
have teeth on the inner side.
3
What is a Threading Die?
Threading is the process of cutting threads using
dies or taps on the bolts and nuts. A die looks
very simple as a tool. Die looks similar to a nut
with internal threads on it in an interrupted
form. The edges of it are called the teeth. Dies
come in round, hex, or other shapes as well.
4
Threading dies can be of two types
Round Dies-Round shape threading dies can fit in
the T-handle. These are usually used to form the
new threads. To use round dies, a handle is
needed. HEX Dies-Most commonly are used to repair
the already formed threads. These dies do not
require a handle to use them.
5
Before using any tool, it is recommended to know
the proper technique to get the desired and
accurate output. The same is applicable for using
the die and tap set, if the user does not know
the techniques, it can be difficult to get the
proper threads. Threads can be re- done on a
worn-out bolt and also a rod can be turned into a
bolt using cutting dies. Here are the steps to
get proper threading.
6
Find Out the Threads Per Inch
A die comes into play to form threads on a weary
bolt. Before using the cutting dies, measure the
threads per inch (TPI). For calculating the
threads of a nut or a bolt, a gauge system is
preferred. After finding out the TPI, select the
corresponding die. A special wrench gets the die
fitted in it. The wrench can hold it and guide.
7
Start Forming New Thread
Now to fit the bolt firmly, a vise is used, which
holds it tightly while the wrench turns over it.
The process of cutting metal with the metal is
heat-producing. Therefore, lubrication is also
required. Turn the die after placing it on the
bolt in a horizontal direction. The wrench
reverses its position to half of the turn after a
set of turns. This reversing of the wrench helps
to clean the cutting threads. It also assists
the die to form better cuts. Moreover,
re-application of the oil is a must throughout
the whole process. Keep on turning the bolt till
the time the bolt moves past the top of the die.
8
Make a Bolt out of a Rod
An ordinary metal rod can be turned into a bolt.
For this, the rod end should be beveled. If
required, the rod end can be chamfered using a
grinder for getting bevel. The rod with a flat
end is difficult for the die to work with.
Again, here also, lubrication is required. Slowly
turn the wrench with patience.
9
Summing Up
Threading is a process that should be carried out
carefully and with patience. Firstly, choosing
the perfect die is an important task as per the
requirement. Proper knowledge to operate the
threading dies is essential. Then, the
above-mentioned steps are necessary to follow to
get them clean and clear threads.
