3Robotic Joint Replacement
Hip Replacement
Shoulder Replacement
Knee replacement surgery also known as knee
arthroplasty can help relieve pain and restore
function in severely diseased knee joints. The
procedure involves cutting away damaged bone and
cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and
kneecap and replacing it with an artificial joint
(prosthesis) made of metal alloys, high-grade
plastics and polymers.
During hip replacement, a surgeon removes the
damaged sections of your hip joint and replaces
them with parts usually constructed of metal,
ceramic and very hard plastic. This artificial
joint (prosthesis) helps reduce pain and improve
function.
Damage to your shoulder is painful and limiting.
If a shoulder injury or condition is serious
enough, a shoulder replacement may be the best
option for regaining your mobility and
independence.
Spine Surgery
Fracture Injuries
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy allows the surgeon to see inside your
joint without making a large incision. Surgeons
can even repair some types of joint damage during
arthroscopy, with pencil-thin surgical
instruments inserted through additional small
incisions.
Spine surgery might be an option if conservative
treatments haven't worked and your pain is
persistent and disabling. Spine surgery often
more predictably relieves associated pain or
numbness that goes down one or both arms or legs.
A fracture is a broken bone. It requires medical
attention. If the broken bone is the result of
major trauma or injury

11Our Specialties
12 13Knee Replacement
During any knee replacement, the damaged
cartilage and bone from the surface of the knee
is removed, along with some soft tissues. The
goal of knee replacement surgery is to provide
the patient with a pain-free knee that allows for
the return to daily activities and lasts for a
long time knee replacement differs from
traditional knee replacement in that it uses an
incision that is smaller and requires less
cutting of the tendons and ligaments. knee
replacement is an evolving area and more research
is needed on the long-term function and
durability. The benefits of knee replacement
have been reported to include less damage to soft
tissues, leading to a quicker, less painful
recovery and more rapid return to normal
activities. Current evidence suggests that the
long-term benefits of minimally invasive surgery
do not differ from those of knee replacement
performed with the traditional approach. Like
all surgery, minimally invasive surgery has a
risk of complications. These complications
include infection, wound healing problems, blood
clots, nerve and artery injuries, and errors in
positioning the prosthetic knee implants. Like
traditional knee replacement surgery, minimally
invasive surgery should be performed by a
well-trained, highly experienced orthopedic
surgeon. Your orthopedic surgeon can talk to you
about his or her experience with minimally
invasive knee replacement surgery, and the
possible risks and benefits of the techniques for
your individual treatment.

15Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure orthopedic
surgeons use to visualize, diagnose, and treat
problems inside a joint. In an arthroscopic
examination, an orthopedic surgeon makes a small
incision in the patient's skin and then inserts
pencil-sized instruments that contain a small
lens and lighting system to magnify and
illuminate the structures inside the joint. Light
is transmitted through fiber optics to the end of
the arthroscopy that is inserted into the
joint. By attaching the arthroscopy to a
miniature television camera, the surgeon is able
to see the interior of the joint through this
very small incision rather than a large incision
needed for surgery. The television camera
attached to the arthroscopy displays the image of
the joint on a television screen, allowing the
surgeon to look, for example, throughout the
knee. This lets the surgeon see the cartilage,
ligaments, and under the kneecap. The surgeon can
determine the amount or type of injury and then
repair or correct the problem, if it is
necessary.
16Hip Replacement
During any hip replacement surgery, the damaged
bone is cut and removed, along with some soft
tissues. In minimally invasive surgery, a smaller
surgical incision is used and fewer muscles
around the hip are cut or detached. Despite this
difference, however, both traditional hip
replacement surgery and minimally invasive
surgery are technically demanding and have better
outcomes if the surgeon and operating team have
considerable experience. Minimally invasive and
small incision total hip replacement surgery is
an evolving area and more research is needed on
the long-term function and durability of the
implants. The benefits of minimally invasive hip
replacement have been reported to include less
damage to soft tissues, leading to a quicker,
less painful recovery and more rapid return to
normal activities. Current evidence suggests that
the long-term benefits of minimally invasive
surgery do not differ from those of hip
replacement performed with the traditional
approach. Like all surgery, minimally invasive
surgery has a risk of complications. These
complications include nerve and artery injuries,
wound healing problems, infection, fracture of
the femur, and errors in positioning the
prosthetic hip implants. Like traditional hip
replacement surgery, minimally invasive surgery
should be performed by a well-trained, highly
experienced orthopedic surgeon. Your orthopedic
surgeon can talk to you about his or her
experience with minimally invasive hip
replacement surgery, and the possible risks and
benefits of the techniques for your individual
treatment.
17Shoulder Replacement
In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged
parts of the shoulder are removed and replaced
with artificial components, called a
prosthesis. The treatment options are either
replacement of just the head of the humerus bone
(ball), or replacement of both the ball and the
socket (glenoid).
18Spine Surgery
Spine surgery might be an option if conservative
treatments haven't worked and your pain is
persistent and disabling.Spine surgery often more
predictably relieves associated pain or numbness
that goes down one or both arms or legs. These
symptoms often are caused by compressed nerves in
your spine. Nerves may become compressed for a
variety of reasons, including Disk
problems. Bulging or ruptured (herniated) disks
the rubbery cushions separating the bones of your
spine can sometimes press too tightly against a
spinal nerve and affect its function. Overgrowth
of bone. Osteoarthritis can result in bone spurs
on your spine. This excess bone most commonly
affects the hinge joints on the back part of the
spinal column and can narrow the amount of space
available for nerves to pass through openings in
your spine. It can be very difficult to pinpoint
the exact cause of your back pain, even if your
X-rays show that you have disk problems or bone
spurs. X-rays taken for other reasons often
reveal bulging or herniated disks that cause no
symptoms and need no treatment.
19Fracture Injuries
A fracture is a broken bone. It requires medical
attention. If the broken bone is the result of
major trauma or injury, The person is
unresponsive, isn't breathing or isn't moving.
Begin CPR if there's no breathing or
heartbeat. There is heavy bleeding. Even gentle
pressure or movement causes pain. The limb or
joint appears deformed. The bone has pierced the
skin. The extremity of the injured arm or leg,
such as a toe or finger, is numb or bluish at the
tip. You suspect a bone is broken in the neck,
head or back.
