Signs It Might be Time to Replace Your Furnace

2
  • Replacing your furnace can be a major expense,
but also a great long-term investment.
  • By upgrading to an energy efficient furnace, you
will save on your monthly energy bill, and reduce
your impact on the environment. Below is a
checklist to help you identify the warning signs
that you may need a new furnace.

3
  • Age of Your System
  • A modern furnace has a typical lifespan of around
15 to 20 years, however technology advances
quickly, and so has the energy efficiency of new
furnaces. Its advisable to consider shopping for
a new more energy efficient one at around the
15-year mark. Review the energy efficient rating
on your current furnace, you may qualify for
federal and provincial rebates which encourage
homeowners to upgrade to ENERGY STAR certified
    products.
  • Your energy bills and equipment repairs are
    steadily increasing
  • Older less efficient furnaces work harder to
produce heat, and as a result, your energy bills
and repair costs steadily increase. If you see
your HVAC repair man more than your friends, its
time to consider replacement. its also important
to keep your family safe problems with your
furnace can lead to health issues from carbon
    monoxide, dust and dander.

  • Rooms are Heating
  • Unevenly As a furnace gets older, it can become
more and more inefficient until it loses the
ability to distribute heat evenly throughout the
house. As a result, some rooms can be colder than
    others.
  • Is Your Furnace Making Strange Noises
  • Older, inefficient furnaces can be noisy, but if
that noise gets louder over time, then you may
    want to consider a replacement.
  • Rattling
  • This can indicate unsecured ductwork, or even the
lower furnace motor not being properly balanced.

6
  • Popping
  • This happens when parts inside of your furnace
heat and cool in response to temperature changes.
  • Humming
  • Your fan motor is probably going to make a bit of
noise, but if its to the point of disruption,
you might need a furnace blower motor
    replacement.
  • Screeching/Squealing
  • Can indicate the blower motor or inducer is
damaged or worn out. It could also be caused by a
loose bearing, deteriorating belt, or an issue
with the pulley holding the belt.

  • If you have noticed any of the above signs from
your furnace, its time to speak with an HVAC
contractor to discuss replacement options. When
thinking about a replacement, you may also
consider renting your equipment. There are an
increasing number of companies that include the
    convenience of maintenance, cleaning, and
emergency service as part of the monthly rental
cost, saving you in both the short and long term.
